Compressor decision?

I know this has been discussed 1000+ times. Trying to decide between MRX M87(white) M76(black) or Dunlop Studio Bass. Any help is appreciated.

If you're still open to suggestions...

... great customer service, btw, if you're into that... Good luck, in your search!

I can't help you chose between any of the options you consider, as I haven't got any personal experience with any of them.

What I do know is that I love my compressor, and that it serves as an important part of achieving my tone always being on.

It smooths out my play slightly, but more importantly help with adding some extra clarity and definition to my tone, also adding a good deal of welcome extra punch, finally I use it to boost the signal from my bass slightly and also it seems to add some undefinable overall niceness to my tone.

I am talking about the EHX Black Finger, which is a tube driven optical compressor.

It is on the bigger more expensive side of compressors, and don't have a lot of parameters to adjust, even if those it got still works great for giving you a wide range of options to adjust how it will process your signal.

Also mine isn't noisy at all, contrary what some people claim, including Bongomania on his review page.

If my Black Finger should ever break beyond repair, I would make sure to safe up for another one, since, as I already mentioned, it has become an important part of my tone.

Whatever you chose, good luck with choosing one that will fit your needs, preferences and playing style.

Also before mentioned review page of compressors by Bongomania might help you decide, even if I don't agree with his review of the EHX Black Finger:

Compressor Reviews

It has a huge database over most of the compressors on the market, and is a great source for information about these, what the particular models are good for and which are worth your time and which are not.

i had the Studio Bass for a while and liked very much ... i prefer Comps that have a Mix/Blend knob !!!

which helps keep Your tone intact .. !! and the filter is very useful , as it can filter the original signal you're Blending back in .. !! makes the unit very useful ...

i only sold it because i went with the DarkGlass Super Symmetry ... it has a unique voice - tubelike

the MXR has some visual aids which are helpful with setting up comp levels ... but , it has no mix knob .

if your choice is very transparent (= expensive usually ) then the mix knob isn't as important ... but many pedals are Not transparent and change your tone ...

my vote - used Seymour Duncan Studio Bass = good value / flexible sounds
