So Basically you are looking for an advanced, to semi-pro bass player from your description, who wants to "hang out" rehearsing EVERY WEEK with no gigs in sight? NO WONDER I keep seeing this ad posted over and over again during the past few months.

Any decent Bass Player (i.e., a REAL Bass player, not a frustrated guitarist that couldn't hack it on guitar in a Band and thinks that a Bass is just a six string guitar with only 4 strings) probably already knows most of your material, or could learn it in a week or two.

Most decent Bass players don't have the time to putz around rehearsing as a social event, because they are looking for other people that also "have their poopie together" and are semi-ready to gig.

Rehearsal is a time to get together as a collective and arrange the songs, NOT a social event to "hang out"...BUT, I do wish you the best in finding what you are looking for (although I pretty much expect we will all see this ad posted over and over yet again...

The ranter was so busy yelling his side of an argument in his head that he didn't take time to consider that plenty of people join groups for the social aspect, not because they want to play gigs ASAP.

First he "translates" the ad into what it "really means", and then he speaks on behalf of all bass players to correct it....and then he assures you he wishes you "the best" with a bonus parting shot of negativity. Thanks, guy!

That could well be just what some busy player (employed, parent, in school, whatever) is looking for. Not for me, and for many of us here on TB, but it's right for someone. They seem to know who and what they're looking for, too.

If I was in NY and about a year more advanced I'd be interested myself. Something regular that I can plan around and keep my skills up and where everyone agrees to show up every time, which I am guessing was a problem in the past and the source of the posters commentary.

I have a "garage band" in NYC and my guys (organ and drummer) come 1-2x weekly for the last few years and we build our original set of all my own original songs. These guys don't get paid but are seasoned musicians that need to play and would not be satisfied with a "Do you know this tune?" type cover band. One is a long time band mate and friend who, like me, needs to play and work on tunes to be his true self. The other is a Craigslist find who has fallen right in step with us as 40-something year old guys who don't need to play out to enjoy playing. I have a terrific home studio with a Tama drum kit and Hammond Porta-B organ with Leslie 760 cabinet for them. They love to come and play my gear.
The reason we don't play out is that I feel that booking, promoting, collection, etc. are all non-music related stuff that I don't want to put energy into. We post on Youtube and if we or anyone else watches then that's great. We are in it to please ourselves.

The funny (almost embarrassing) thing about this is that I contacted those people over a month ago. I'm one of those that is less concerned with gigging than I am about playing some good music (a form of practicing as far as I am concerned) - and I'd love to find a great guitarist or singer to help me when I'm recording my originals.

So I answered the ad. They said fine come on down, even sent me some other songs that they said they're doing. So, I figured if I'm going to learn a few tunes, pick ones I like. I did and they said why did I not chose the Alice In Chains and the Chilli Peppers. I said I'm not a big fan of either.

That was it, they never got back me.

So I continue to look.

Hmmm, do you have rehearsal space (sounds like you are already recording)? Run your own ad.

I am a mediocre bass player that has been at it since 1968. I don't play just for fun, but I play to be on stage. Every band I have been in started in the garage, but the goal was to get in front of people.
Understand what you're saying for sure. For me the stage is more angst than it's worth but I do (or did) enjoy the energy of live playing. It's tough to say to a bunch of band mates , "let's perfect this so no one gets to hear it". Which is why I just record. In recent years and since retiring last year, I've gotten the bug to play live.
