Defective Trussrod Wheel ?

It's a clever idea in a couple of ways. From a manufacturing standpoint, having the spoke wheel removable makes things easier. I build some spoke wheel style necks, and one of the hassles is that the wheel is in the way. You have to install the truss rod early in the process, but then how do you shape and sand the heel of the neck when the wheel is sticking out? It's a problem solved by having the wheel a separate part. Shape the heel, then install the wheel.

Also, it may work somewhat as a safety key. If someone tries to stupidly over tighten the truss rod, the wheel may pop loose without much harm to the internal hex. Then it can be reinstalled/repaired.

Our spoke wheels insert onto the end of a regular hex rod, so they er removeable. It's a wheel with a hex extension that is forced into the open hex end of the rod... it's a very snug pressure fit and so far we haven't had one rattle or come loose.

Do you have those wheel assemblies made up for you, or are they a commercially available part?

They come preassembled with our necks from our OEM. I'm fairly sure ours are a 4mm metric size, but I can inquire about about others. The hex "stem" is nothing like the one drawn up by the OP - it's fairly short and purpose built for putting on as a last step. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

Ah okay, so yours is a one piece machined part. The wheel, a short hub, then milled flats to make a hex on the end. If I were going to make them here, that's how I would do it.

I'm surprised that Stew-Mac or Allparts doesn't offer a part like that, as an optional accessory to convert their standard truss rods into spoke wheel style.

Here's what the unit looks like. They're tough to get out.

Do you know what size hex you want me to inquire about?

I have one that is a little loose like that (can't remember which bass), and I resolved it it least temporarily with a dab of heavy grease on the shaft. Now I want to look at it again to see if there’s a setscrew or if I can drill and tap it for one.

Thanks for the info, Marko! I don't have a immediate need for that part myself. I make up all my own truss rods here, including spoke wheel styles. But I can see how that part would be useful for the hobby builders and small shop Luthiers. It would be nice to know if they can be bought somewhere in small quantities.
