Demeter Bass 400? Anyone used it?

EQ points are actually fantastic....Huge Phat tones are there when you want.....I cannot get a bad sound out of my VTBP201
I compare the 400D to my Fender Super Bassman. They are both articulate and smooth and fat. The Deneter is even more open up top while the Bassman hits harder. This is due to the tube power section. I ran a line from the 400d into the Bassman and it was the best of both worlds.

Looks like it only comes with an XLR out if you do the transformer upgrade? Even if not needed by the owner I suppose excluding it would ding the resale value disproportionately. I assume that the XLR would be post-tube(s)?

I wonder if the FX loop output would be a reasonable alternative and still get tube-ified? I have sometimes taken the FX out on an amp and run it through a Radial JDI as an alternative to the amp's XLR.

The FX out is tubeariffic. The non Jenson XLR is, I think, pre or post EQ via a switch. I'll look at it when I get home.

The non-Jensen version of the Bass 400 still has an XLR out, but not the 800w version.

Thanks. So on the 800 you are almost forced to the upgrade since there is no FOH output. Not everyone needs it, but seems like it could be a resale problem. Does the 800 have an effects loop? Seems like the product description described that as optional but I don't see a drop down to select it unless it gets thrown in with the Jensen upgrade? I think if I was going to spend that much on an amp I would spring for the 800 (which is 400 at 8 ohms - EDIT - 500 at 8 ohms).

Is the single volume control adjusting the power amp or the input gain?

I canot really answer any questions regarding the 800, and the 400 doesn't have a manual yet. Jim is writing it now! I would drop him a line.

If I had it to do over again I would get the 800. I didn't because 1. I'm cheap; 2. I have a Mesa D800; 3. I didn't know how much I would like it. What I do know now is that I am going to sell the Mesa and get the 800. I'll keep the 400 at least until I get the 800, as I like it!

What do owners think of the bass EQ points (60hz and 120hz)? Without knowing any better I probably would have chosen 40 and 80. I like the mid at 500hz which I find is a good place to cut. Ampeg's ultra low switch that I love bumps 40hz and cuts 500hz.

60 & 120 are great. I'm quite happy with them. I find the 60 setting is great for adding some pillow to the P bass low end. I find the 120 is useful for adding some kick to J and bridge pickups (or thin neck pickups) to make it behave more like a p in the mix. Though, generally I do find I either boost at the 60 to add a little pillow, but rarely cut much at that setting, and I tend to cut the 120 but rarely boost it.

Bergs seem to be very highly esteemed on TB and they make a 310 that has me drooling (3 drivers in a cab that is smaller and lighter than a lot of 2x10's). I'm just trying to learn about some of the higher end cabs in preparation for a purchase. I'm currently running a pair of Markbass NY121's.

What I don't understand is why isn't every high end cab maker doing more of what Acme and Barefaced (and maybe others) are doing in terms of going low enough to produce a B string fundamental. Seems like the only downside is efficiency. Maybe that mattered a long time ago, but now mega-power is mega-cheap. Kinda along the lines of why buy a computer that doesn't have at least a terabyte of storage.

is this still true? Looking at the product description for the 800w it sounds like it does have an XLR out

What I meant is “as standard”. The VTBP-M-800D has always had the available “option” for a Jensen studio output which is currently an extra $230 (see screenshots from the Demeter site below).

Now that I am getting the 400D I'll spring this thread up again. I know the 800D has more power and was wondering if 400 was enough, but later on the Minnie 800 might be on the list as you can have the option of 400 or 800 watts. Also if you like or want to play another pre you love like my Alembic F2B I can use it. I have heard the 400 is enough for most gigs as my gigs are not super loud.
