OK, let's leave the political part of this out. Don't go there.

But COME ON!!!!! Are any of you really so naive as to think that your information was "private" in ANY WAY on FaceBook???

This "outrage" over your information being sold might be the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time.

Your information has been sold by Mark Zuckerberg since the day you signed up. You can't really think that he made billions simply off of random ad revenue. Nothing is "random" on FaceBook. Your information, trends, likes, traffic, friends, and everything else you have willingly shared with the world has been used to focus the ads you see like a laser beam. That is selling your information. That has ALWAYS been selling your information.

Give me a break. I'm so tired of people being offended over stupid stuff I don't know what to do. Yes, I see the irony of being offended at people being offended. I get it.

But, seriously, it's about time for some of you to go into more debt to buy a life.

If you honestly thought anything you posted on FaceBook was private, you aren't very bright. If you only READ the agreement you have to click to sign up, it literally says they OWN any picture you post and can do whatever they want with it. In fact, there is no such thing as "deleting" a profile. That too is stated in the agreement. They simply set your profile aside when you no longer wish to use it. But they don't "delete" ANYTHING.

Grow up, people. This isn't new. Join a new outrage march. This one is even dumber than most. :meh:

I have never been so glad that I avoided that cesspool of stupidity.

Whew! Glad I got that off my chest. OK, where's my coffee? :hyper:

I believe it’s in the terms of service that FB pretty much “owns” your data once you sign up and there’s virtually no way to permanently delete ones account either. It’s nothing but an endless parade of attention whoring, narcissism and the politically ill informed. I have views on it that run deeper than that, but I can’t share them here without getting political/permabanned.

And thank you for not doing so. The politics of this really isn't the big deal to me. This fake shock and outrage over "suddenly discovering" that one's "personal data" isn't private on Facebook is the ridiculous part.

Feel better now? ;)

Yeah, no surprise here. In fact, it has been well known for years that they sell user information or, at the very least, market posts toward profiles that are most likely to garner clicks and engagement from the people they are pointed toward.

To act oblivious toward this means one of two things: you're an idiot or you choose to play the idiot.

I stopped logging into Facebook at the beginner of the year as a NY's resolution. I haven't missed it, and I don't plan on going back.

Oh, and I'm not saying anything by saying this, but this whole FB thing seems to be yet one more notch in the proverbial belt ;)

Agreed.

And the list goes on. Smartphones, Amazon (website and devices), Google. Pretty much anything we do online. I think we tend to bend the things (or thoughts about things) we'd like to see them and then bust out in displeasure eh? ;)

No.

But I have a permanent add blocker running so rarely get to see my personally tailored adds!

Doesn't matter. The content on FB still gets taylored based on what you engage with, who you engage with, what times you engage in, etc... you might not get traditional ads, but everything else on FB that you see is unique to you.

I'm not even reading your post because I know you're gonna be dead-on and you aren't running for office so no big whoop if I'm mistaken about you. Lemmings. Sheeple. The intelligentsia...

Use Noscript, put sites like FB, Google, etc on blacklist, all better. At least I hope that's enough.

Some sites may lose functionality (like parts of TB, I can't see some graphics because I must have blocked something I don't want unblocked), but if that's the case, I'm discouraged from surfing said site anyway.

what's the difference between FB and TB? everything we write here is 'kept' data. some of the differences between the two platforms are obvious. some of the similarities aren't. right?

Businesses have been selling private info for years. I don't know why people think Facebook is any different.

Like you said though, being constantly offended by other's perceived outrage is also getting out of hand. Once you turn off the 24 hour news channels and the twitter you find that most of this "outrage" is not as prevalent as they make it out to be. I've yet to come across anyone, who wasn't already an idiot anyway, who doesn't understand how Facebook works.

The point is not that it's done. The point is that we all KNOW it's being done. And now all of a sudden people are "outraged" that it's being done. That's the point.

TB is about as social media as I get. And I'm fine with whatever they do with my information because I KNEW that a successful business model on the interwebz includes ad revenue...... TARGETED ad revenue..... when I signed up. (Of course, I'm a supporting member, so there's that.)

Again, the whole reason for my post is to air out my disdain for people who are offended because they are TOLD they should be offended. They have no idea why. And they also knew what they were getting into with FaceBook. Honestly, how did they think the kid made billions? By randomly selling ads to Pepsi to just hit whatever 100,000 people they happened to hit that day?

I call BS on the "ignorance" of the masses. And I call BS on their being offended.

Maybe I'm just way out of the loop. What "masses" are you talking about? I read a couple off newspapers daily. I haven't heard a word of any kind of masses complaining about Facebook. Are you talking about people you know personally or a local group or something? I'm not on Twitter or Instagram and I don't watch cable news so maybe I am out of the loop.

sorry, two fingers: i didn't get the memo...i'm outraged, but over different stuff. (FB has me confused with someone else, anyway.)

i'm with you: but that ignorance is long standing! 80% of the global population are oafs. but we already knew that. from history. of humankind.

you and i presume to be in the other 20%, but we may never know for sure! in either case = we will both need some good luck!

if there's a march on washington over this: sign me up! but i might have a gig.
