Diversity amongst luthiers and music equipment compnies?

My friend Eric Bradley has run Ampworks in NYC for 15 years and was Harry Kolbe's right-hand man for many years prior.
He has a long roster of A-list players as clients and is also an interesting artist and musician outside of his custom amp work.
I never really gave much thought to the fact that he's a black artisan in a white-dominated part of the (white, male dominated) industry until I read this thread, but it isn't just his skin color that makes him 'diverse', as far as I'm concerned. He's also just an interesting, well-rounded guy.

Eric does great work. I met him through 30th Street Guitars for whom he was doing amp work and he brought my beloved 1986 GK Micro combo back to life!

Love the LEH basses and her story was interesting with her Chicago roots… that’s where I’m at.

Not sure if she’s been mentioned but there’s Lisa Hahn of LEH.

https://www.lehguitars.com/

This is a great thread!

I own one of her basses and it is killer. L. Ellis Hahn seems like a really cool human being too. Someday I hope to meet her in person. She has created a unique instrument built to high standards but takes her own direction in the ergonomics department. Such great balance and easy playing.

Ive heard nothing but praise for her instruments. To all those out there saying that the only thing that matters is quality, I don’t disagree. However, this is a woman in a male dominated field that paid her dues working for Roger! Kudos to Roger for providing a space for her to succeed and grow!

I really like her work - and of course liked it when she was at Sadowsky as well but would have not probably known her. Definitely props to her in male dominated field… one thing in addition to quality point that is cool about the diversity of builders and if it increases…

let’s just assume that all quality is at the same level for now, knowing builders of all different stripes and sizes will make amazing instruments and there’s no relation there between individuals background and the quality… what they do bring is different understanding and perspective that can bring new ideas to shake things up. Of course every individual does… but a female building may have a more personal understanding of ergonomics or a tendency to accommodate the players and individuals of different types that could lead to innovations.

Nothing is so linear of course, but as overwhelming research shows in so many other areas… bringing a diversity to teams, businesses, and environments is synonymous with improving performance and excellence. So seeing more than I knew existed here was excellent and also so excited to see some others enjoy the discussion.

while the world has so many struggles right now, I’m also so amazed at all the progress we make as human beings despite challenges… and in the microcosm of music we’ve seen an explosion of technology and advancement improve our lives (and save our backs haha). With the increasing pace of diversity of voices combined with new technology, more inclusiveness, and better opportunity for all (I hope) I can only imagine how much more amazing things we’ll see - and be able to use and play haha.

There’s an amazing Afro-American bass builder in New Orleans - Carl Smith (Carl S. Basses)
Carl uses premium woods, electronics, hardware and is a master luthier.. I own and have owned several high end basses, from Modulus, Tobias, Smith, Roscoe, and Carl’s work is amazing and is as good as anything around Imo. He’s a super cool guy too, definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a new build! Edit: Carl has a Facebook page under Carl S basses.

Thanks for this thread. I have been thinking about getting a custom bass for a while and previous web searches for female-identified electric bass luthiers hadn’t been fruitful, but now I’m dreaming about getting my hands on a LEH Offset 5.

One part of the custom process that appeals to me are the connections in the stories of the maker and user. I still regularly play through the Sadowsky preamp I bought when visiting the shop late 90s, the Offset prototype is the same color scheme as my current J, and the LEH shop in Portland is a short ride from a bicycle builder who built me a very custom frame early in their career so I feel like the stars are aligning, pun on Ellis’s space backgrounds accepted.

I don’t need to have such a connection with all instruments (or bikes), but for me, music is about community and connecting with others so supporting people from traditionally excluded groups in their journey is a big bonus.

Well this is a bass forum. Mostly dealing with electric bass. Which has been in mass production and on the market since the 50s.
That's 1950s, not 1850s.
I suspect that any lack of diversity in electric bass luthiery has more to do with lack of interest or exposure, than is does deliberate exclusion.
I'll refer you to Bruce's post.
If you want to spotlight some particular Luthiers as examples of our diversity, that's fine. But please don't try to present us as some kind of restrictive group. Because we're not.

I find it a bit strange to talk about diversity and luthiery (or life in common). I "know" Luthier's Corner but I haven't seen only a few of you. I couldn't care less what you look, what you believe in or what you think about politics as long as you behave respectfully and let everyone be whatever we want to be. An ******* is an ******* no matter anything else. People here in LC is a bunch of great guys with common interest and will to learn new every day and help each other. That's something great. Let's keep it that way.

I used to watch a lot of Youtube videos of some female luthier from Germany (or maybe Holland). She's in her fifties and makes and fixes mostly modern acoustic guitars, but sometimes electric as well. Alas, for the life of me I cannot remember her name.
Found her: Gabriele Réti
