Double P placement

The phase switch is still an interesting thing to have (moreso in a Frankenstein), it offers lots of new tones really, it's only useless (at least for an "orthodox" bass tone) when both pickups are at max volume. Blend to either side and have fun.
I agree,
I added a phase switch to a double humbucker i put together.
I really don’t use the phase switch BUT it does make a totally different tone when i do play with it.... i could see a use for that in particular songs when i hit the fuzz or something.

After some messing around, this is the placement im going with.
Kinda between a P snd a PJ that i have. Also, a series parallel switch is pretty sweet!

That is how I would do it as well. Neck pickup approx. in traditonal location (reversed) and the bridge pickup roughly in 60s Jazz position to add some bite. Nice.

The neck pickup of the Lee Sklar model is too far from the bridge for my taste.
I played with the Sklar placement as well as several other positions and pickup configurations. At least with these Oripure pickups, this placement kicked butt.
I really like them in series with each other, once i place them in the bass their actually going in, ill mess around with wiring schemes as well... nothing too crazy but i like versatility.

Double reverse P with a J at the neck, that’s where I would go.

Ill try it!!

and i did... and i liked it!!
Of course the J had to sit diagonal (aesthetically) to line up with the strings. That was fine and I played around with it for a while like that.
In the end, it was pulling away from my original intent of this particular project.

Im sticking with the double reverse split P.
It’ll be cool,

unless i mess it up :bag:

FWIW, I've been toying with putting a third pickup in between the two reverse P's.
Either another, matching reverse EMG P or a 50's single coil.
If for nothing else I want a thumb rest right there.

i invite you two for a quick listen in my above post.

Sounds great in parallel; all pickup combinations work well. Somehow I prefer a bridge P to a bridge J when soloed - sounds chewy. Maybe I am dreaming, but the double P in center position sounds less scooped than a Jazz to my ears.
I prefer the 2 in parallel, series works for thumping bass lines but I like the fuller/flatter? frequency range in parallel.
Im going to re wire this setup and treat the 2 sets of pickups as 1 so they will share 1 volume control. Im still deciding if i want to be able to switch each set on and off. I am certainly going to play with series/parallel for each split P as well as keeping series/parallel for both....
None of this is ground breaking but i can only read so much, hearing is believing for me.

As above, but my view is a little different, setting aside personal bias. I would mount the bridge pickup with the EA segment poles where the poles of a '70's J-bridge pickup would be, and the DG segment on the neck side (reverse) so the D&G strings have actual tone. I would then put a .01 microfarad capacitor in-line from the pickup to its volume control to keep the low end fundamentals from getting wobbly from comb filtering. Then I would install the other pickup as a conventional P-pickup placement. I would consider using a +5% or +10% overwind for the bridge pickup to help equalize the output.

Ok, thanks!
A bit of insight into your personal bias might help me put your reply into context here.
Have you put one together with the specifications you laid out?
Id love to hear some clips.
This project was done with somewhat off the shelf parts that were chosen through other TB members referrals. Nothing custom or modified (so far) other than me making them work and fit . I was thinking the recorded sounds were pretty good
(never mind my playing :) ) If you picked up on some tones that could be better refined I’m open to the help.
As well, im always open to constructive criticism that helps me make my projects better and helps me understand what I’m actually doing. I get a bit lost in the science but i do well in practice and trial & error.
