This is sexy little Rita, a 34 inch scale bass made in October of 2010. She is one of two basses that I used to demonstrate my building techniques on my Myspace page (www.myspace.com/drakecustombass). Her neck is two pieces of quarter sawn Wenge with a 24 fret Wenge fret board and faux turquoise inlays. She has two carbon fiber rods that run along her dual action truss rod to give great strength and stability. Her neck is slim and very fast. Her headstock facings are of figured Padauk.
Her body is comprised of a Wenge center block with Padauk wings that have a beautiful color to them. She appears orange in the photos but she is more reddish in person. Her color will darken with age reaching a deep red to crimson. She is finished in a handrubbed oil varnish that gives her a luster and shows off the texture of the wood. Her electronics cavity is covered by a quarter inch Wenge cover.
Her electronics package consists of EMG 3.0 Jazz pickups with their built in preamps. They are wired in a 9 volt configuration and are wired vol/vol/tone. The tone of this bass is just amazing. I can coax deep growly bass tones with punchy mids and highs with her. Her action feels nice and soft and can be set fairly low.
To round out her gear I have used Hipshot Ultra-lite tuners, Hipshot A style bridge, and Dunlop strap locks. String spacing is adjustable with the bridge she has.
She is 1.5 inches wide at the nut and 2.5 inches at the 24th fret. She weighs in at 9.1 lbs. This bass is currently for sale for $1250 and includes a Kaces brand Polyform rigid case. Shipping will be extra and depends on your location. PM me or email me at [email protected] if you have questions about this bass or if you would like to purchase her. More pictures of Rita and other basses I have for sale at my website www.drakecustombass.com.

For sale: Marilyn This bass is another one of the two basses that were used to demonstrate how Drake Custom builds basses (www.myspace.com/drakecustombass). She was completed in November of 2010.
Her neck is made of 2 pieces of quarter sawn Wenge topped with a 24 fret, 34 inch scale Wenge fretboard. I have bound the fretboard with Bloodwood to give this bass some color. Her peghead facings are Wenge and the neck is finished in just a light coat of oil that gives her a raw smooth feel and a matte appearence. Wenge is a self stabilized wood that does not require finish to resist warping. She also sports two carbon fiber stab rods and a dual action truss rod.
Her body is of blonde colored light weight Swamp Ash with a Wenge center block. Her satin finish is a light poly varnish to seal the wood without killing the tone. Her electronics package consists of two EMG 3.0 Jazz pickups wired in a 9 volt configuration. These pickups are dead quiet even at high volume levels. The combination of wood and electronics makes this bass have a warmer focused low end and warm poppy mids and highs.
I used Hipshot brand hardware on this bass. Ultra-lite tuners, and an A style bridge that allows the player to adjust spacing. I also used Dunlop brand strap locks to keep her on the player and not on the floor.
She weighs in at 8 lbs. and measures 1.5 inches wide at the nut and 2.5 inches wide at the 24th fret.
This bass was a fun build and I almost do not want to sell her but she is for sale for only $1275 USD. She comes with a Kaces brand Polyform rigid case included. Shipping is extra. Please ask for a quote. I do ship internationally. If you have questions or would like to purchase this bass please PM me or contact me at [email protected] More pictures of Marilyn and other basses that are for sale are located at www.drakecustombass.com.

This little darling is Fionna and she was started in the summer of this year. I had to put her aside to build customer builds but I was able to finish her this week.
Fionna is a 33 inch medium scale fretless bass. Her neck is of flamed Hard Maple which has a dual action truss rod and two carbon fiber stabilization rods to keep her neck straight and true. Her flamed Hard Maple finger board is lined with Macassar Ebony fretlines and side dots only. Her fingerboard’s playing surface is coated in 8 layers of superglue to minimize string wear and adds greatly to her tone. Her headstock is laminated in figured Walnut front and back and she has a Tusq nut. Her curvy and carved body is of figured Walnut front and back with a soft flamed Maple core. She is semi-chambered which reduces weight and seems to add resonate qualities to her tone. Her electronics are EMG Jazz pickups with a 9 volt active circut. The Hipshot brand A style bridge, Hipshot Ultra-lite tuners, a Walnut cavity cover, Dunlop straplocks, and Ebony wood control knobs completes her equipment. Her tone is a nice low-mid growl with the smooth warm “Mwaahh” fretless sound. Her sustain is amazingly long and I could hold out notes for several seconds. I was able to copy tones I have heard on Pearl Jam’s Ten album without pedals or anything. At 8 pounds this bass is light and easy to play. Her fast neck is 1.5 inches at the nut and 2.5 inches at the 24th fret. This bass is currently for sale for $1350 and includes a Kaces brand Polyform rigid case. Shipping is extra. Please ask for a quote. I do ship internationally. PM or contact me at [email protected] if you have questions about this bass or if you would like to purchase her. I highly endorse Drake Custom.

I played Rita, Marilyn and Fionna for about two hours on the same day, trying to make a decision which to buy. I now own both Marilyn and Fionna, shown in this string. All three were incredible basses. Ergonomically wonderful, very light at 8 - 9 pounds, play like a dream and tone all day long.

Andrew does an incredible job. His designs are creative. His understanding of the "right stuff" with electronics and tone wood makes for marvelous tonal possibilities, power, punch and sustain. The quality of his craftsmanship, attention to detail and finish are superb. His prices are very realistic for the working musician.

If you're serious about what you play, want something truely unique that will be a lifelong musical partner and care about quality in the product and service after the sale, see Andrew. He's top drawer!

Koog.

Is Rita still for sale? Do you have any other awesome basses to show us that are for sale? About Rita, no active/passive switch? Could one be added? If so at what price? I was looking at this thread and while playing sunshine of your love by cream on my squire affinity J bass, I realized that the J bass format is one that I should look for, and Rita is the ultimate in this department! I hope I'm not breaking the rules by 'resurrecting' a thread well over a year old but I'm getting close to that $1250!
P.S I sent you an email, I can now officially afford Rita and shiipping cross country!

He's alive and well and building a lot of commissioned instruments and doing a bang up repair and rebuild business. I'm talking with him about a special build to honor my mom whose music (trained to sing opera and a classical pianist) is being stolen by Alzheimer's.

Still loving mine!
I listened to yours in the Reiner amps thread. Good sounding bass!

Last time I was at Andrew's place (he's done some work on a couple of my instruments), a month or so ago, he had several basses, at least one guitar, and a mandolin in progress. I'm not sure how much he's online, but he is building, that's for sure.
