Is that a singlecut, hollow-body, Jazz-cum-Les Paul? It's quite the looker! You should post some more pictures of it, here and elsewhere! Can you describe what you were going for with that bass, and its sound and feel?
That's a pretty good description! It's a mix of my favorite basses. My FGN Jazz, my Epiphone 5120e, my Martin B15e and my Ibanez AFB200 and Drake 7.
I'd been thinking for years of having a bass made in honor of mom whose Alzheimer's killed her music (classical pianist and mezzo soprano opera trained) and I met Andrew on the Internet. I bought one of his spec basses the 7, and never played anything better.
So I saved some cash and gave him a vague idea of what I wanted. I wanted a semi-hollow or hollow body because I love their sounds. I wanted 32-inch scale because it gives a little of that short scale thump but holds the deep was of linger scales. I wanted the thin and fast neck of the Drake 7, the Jazz sound of the FGN, the cutaway of the Ibanez and the ability to play with my acoustic duo, Americana/country band and sub in a blues band.
And I wanted him to do stuff he'd always wanted to try.
I also wanted moms name, Nancy Lou, on it.
We talked back and forth and wound up with a pretty awesome looking bass. He recommended the woods, the "f-holes" and the abalone shell binding and mother of pearl inlay. And we agreed in a zero fret.
It's semi hollow with a slight belly cut, the cut being his recommendation. Two passive Bartolini Jazz pups were his idea. The piezo bridge pickup was mine but the individual lockdown bridges with individual piezos and a Fishman preamp were his idea. They can be played Bart's only, Bart's and piezo or just piezo.
Andrew used a lot of new techniques on this and I can't be happier. It has a Woody, jazzy sound that gets more funky as you roll on more piezo. Not much deep P sound, but I find I prefer the Jazz tones anyway.
The neck is crazy easy to play it weighs a little over 7 pounds. She sounds amazing. I haven't put it down for two weeks and she gets to hit the stage in Saturday with the Americana band
