Effects Forum Rules :: Effects Forum Rules :: Effects Forum Rules :: Important!
1. Respect the questions of other members, the only stupid question is the one not asked.
2. Legal discussion will not be allowed in this forum. More info: Behringer Lawsuit Threads
3. Wireless, Tuner & Power Conditioners are not effects. Posts regarding these go in Misc.
4. "Guess" threads. Puzzle-oriented "Guess What I Used To Record This" threads with sound clips are only given a three day window of existence. If the answer isn't guessed in three days, the author of the thread can reveal the answer before the thread is closed.
edit(JT) : -->5. Posting anything in this forum phrased in a manner that could be construed as insulting the use of effects in general by bassists will henceforth be considered trolling, and will be dealt with accordingly.

Do guitar pedals work with bass? Can I damage them this way?

Guitar pedals will function with a bass, but the quality of the resulting sound will vary. Experiment! No harm will come of it.

Which [overdrive/chorus/delay/etc..] is the best?

There is no BEST per se. Each effect will react differently because of different instruments, strings, amps, and of course your style. Do some searching, there are a lot of discussion on these topics.

Difference between overdrive, distortion, and fuzz:

Overdrive, distortion and fuzz are often used interchangeably, but in a nutshell can be used to describe three degrees of the same effect: overdrive being a slightly grittier tone often heard in tube amps, distortion being a much dirtier tone while still retaining note definition, and fuzz tends to be a much more extreme distortion where note definition begins to be lost.

On a technical basis: overdrive refers to soft clipping, whereas the extremes of a sine wave are compressed a bit, distortion compresses them significantly more, and fuzz cuts off the tips.

What pedals did insert bassist here use?
Search! Your question has probably already been answered. Pedalboards of the stars thread, which might give you the information you need

How do I post soundclips that are too large to attach here?
To post a soundclip that is too large to attach on Talkbass, a free service is available at www.yousendit.com.

Should I put my insert effect here before the input or in the effects loop
Some effects are designed to be run at instrument level (between instrument and amp) or line level (effects loop) but may sound great in the opposite. Read the manual for recommendations, but feel free to experiment. As a general rule of thumb, however: If you step on it, it's intent is to be run at instrument level. If it's rackmountable, it's generally designed for line level applications.

Can I use images from insert website here?
Images are often under the copyright of the designer. Generally as long as credit is given, usage is considered ok, unless they otherwise impact the rights of the designer.

What order should I put my effects in?
The only right answer is - it depends.

After a number of recent incidents we have to post this reminder that really shouldn't need posting.

This is a forum for discussing the usage of Effects on bass. By definition the people posting here use and love effects. Coming into here and saying that effects are useless or unneeded is as dictionary a definition of trolling as there is and will be dealt with as such.

Note, this is different from explaining in an intelligent manner why you don't use effects in response to a question: "I can't really find a use for a ring modulator in my church band" for example. But statements in the spirit such as: "effects suck", "they are for guitar only", "I only need my fingers" will be considered as trolling and subject to warning / infractions.

Any threads started with titles such as "why do you use effects?" will be closed as even if started with good intent, which is hard to discern, they always attract the trolls and go downhill.

If you must start a "what effects do I need?" thread, the title is a red flag to trolls, name it better such as "what effects would work well for my bhangra / death metal / reggae band?"

there seems to be little crossover between the actual long ongoing effects threads and the constant i need an od or i need a fuzz posts, personally i think it's highly interesting that i can record clean and then funk up the bass with envelope filters, slight crushes, and subtle reverb, but live we're just too sludgy to do that or i'm just too inexperienced to get a cool drivey effects laden tone

Excellent! This section seems like it will help address the people who are following links from the home page and would not see the note at the top of the effects forum.

Thank you so much! This has to be one of the friendliest and most fun corners of TB, so it will be nice to stop the troll invasions.

there should be 'no bass' threads on the 'basses' forums. :D:cool:

There are, both on the BG and DB sides. Posts about EUBs sometimes even get it from both sides.

Right, it is a little bit like signing up on golf forum to start a thread like "why do you guys play golf? It is such a dumb sport"

Now, and in reference to the "what is the best OD/Fuzz?" question, it is to the Effect section what the "what is the best bass for metal?" question is to the Bass section.

It's cute that some players follow arbitrary rules for playing bass:
  • Can't use FX
  • Can't use EQ
  • Can't use a pick
  • Can't play a "relic"
  • ...yadda yadda yadda
But it's annoying when they insist that these silly rules must apply to everyone (or that only "real players" follow them)
I hate reading these : "Jaco didn't need XXX" I like to think that maybe Jaco liked XXX but simply didn't think it'd serve his music
