EFFECTS Forum Rules and FAQ -- MUST READ

Btw, I really have no issue with someone responding to a legit 'how do I get this sound' query by saying that is best achieved via pickups/eq/amp blah, blah, blah. I see this when posters inquire about a getting a growly sound but not necessarily overdrive for example.

Go back and re-read the original post of this thread. David specifically warns against generic questions such as those because they are troll magnets.

Perhaps someone can write an unbiased article explaining the pros and cons of effects, and that could be stickied, or added to the newbie FAQ.
Exactly.

Open, generic questions don't have to be an excuse for trolling.

I already read the original post and I remember David warning against those posts. That doesn't mean I have to agree with David.

Edit: Although, I do agree with at least 90% of the original post. Just not the part about not naming a thread "why do you use effects".

Can we keep the effects people from trolling the amps forum?
Whenever someone asks about a tube head there are always the people that try and tell the OP that they dont need a tube head because they can get the same tone with some peddle and any SS head.
Sorry you can't

FYI, people in the effects forum answer "that's just an SVT with x bass" and that is completely acceptable. Your comparison does not hold water at all. Saying "you do not need effects, effects are for guitar" is quite different than saying "that sound comes from an all tube amp". You'd be surprised how many people in the effects forum use a full tube amp and would recommend it for getting a full tube amp sound.

In addition to this (which is totally true), I doubt that, one recent isolated event aside, the number of people "trolling" the amps forum saying "just use pedal X" even remotely approaches the inverse.

I like pedals and fx. A lot. Since I was a teenager (I still own my first Boss DS1). I like to turn on and off fx and turning knobs and experimenting.. l

I guess that all this "trolling" thing is a matter of knowledge and musical wisdom. I've been playing a lot of gigs, with a lot of bands and a lot of styles. Sometimes it's a matter of bass/cable/amp , sometimes you need something more. For my next gig I wanted to go just with my bass , a clip tuner and my wireless because for the kind of music we play I can go straight to the amp if I want.. but the band wants me playing a bass intro for one of the songs and I always use a flanger to play it.. so I'll bring a pedal.

I've been through this before... some people think that they're cooler than the rest because they don't use fx at all... some people think that they're cooler than the rest because they have a huge pedalboard.. It's not an "all or nothing" thing. If it works for you, that's fine.. If it doesn't, don't loose your time complaining about it, or telling everyone that they're wrong...

Oh dear.

I've never used effects pedals on bass, and only ever used a Tube Screamer or Fuzz Box on guitar, but I've recently acquired a Zoom B3, and it's laden with effects which I have no idea how to use.

How should I frame my questions about them in order to stay within the rules?

For example, there's a thing called a "flanger"; I want to know what it's supposed to do, how to incorporate it into a sound, what sort of music it works well with. My natural reaction would be to ask "What is the point and purpose of a 'Flanger'," but I think my thread would get deleted.

I have a lot of questions like that, because I'm a total noob with effects, and I don't want to get any grief for asking honest questions.

I'm not going to try to speak for the mods, but I do think this announcement has caused a slight amount of unnecessary hand-wringing. As I understand it, the only question(s) that is/are being somewhat ruled out are the most general ones about effects that will attract the anti-effects crowd. Examples:
  • Do you use effects?
  • Should I use effects?
  • Why use effects?
  • Are effects good for bass?
  • Effects or no effects?
If you have any specificity at all in your question, I don't think your question is the problem. Examples:
  • Zoom B3 Effects help for newbie
  • Help with understanding different effect types
  • Can you explain a flanger to me?

that is exactly the intent

We gotta get Captain Picard playing with a P.

Maybe, but in a previous life (as Gurney Halleck in Dune) he played a Stick...

P.S. I love my effects

One could ask "what is a good example of a specific pedal type", IE: flanger (which for those new to effects is not really self explanatory).
I love my flanger, incidentally!
The only problem is you'll get a lot of posts recommending each person's favorite pedal that they own, and not a comprehensive or often informative answer.

Most if not all PC interfaces have effects sims built in, which are pretty useful for trying out something you don't own or have direct access to at a local level.
The effects are usually based fairly accurately on real pedals, so that's a bonus.
If yo really like one you can buy the pedal it's based on and be reasonably assured of getting a similar tone.
If there are free trial versions available, that would be handy to get a decent idea what the capabilities and limitations of certain pedals are.

All pedals are definitely NOT created equal to say the least, but at the minimum one needs to know just what they do.
After that it's down to personal preference and the endless vagaries of tone.

I'm an atheist (literally), and it would never occur to me to join a religious forum. It would be offensive for me to claim that my way is superior, and childish even to offer it as an alternative. I assume that the members are all capable of making their own decisions, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that they've chosen to live their lives differently than I have.

This is perhaps one of the best posts I've read today. This can apply equally to politics, conspiracy theories, and any other category in which dogma can bring out the arrogance in people.
