EMG GZR vs SEYMOUR DUNCAN vs DiMarzio vs (your recommendation ) for p bass in versatile cover band

Well, the SPB-1 is more traditional, and that is my recommendation for a bass that is playing rock to pop and beyond.
You'd be fine with the QPs if you used that bass in your doom band, but you'd have a hard time making it fit into pop songs.

I bought the Geezers and tried them out for several weeks, then swapped them out for the Quarter Pounders. I sold the Geezers immediately and haven’t looked back... that’s been a few years now.

FWIW, I also have 2 Classic vibe Squier P basses both with stock pickups, and I like the sound.

I think you really just have to experiment and see what works. You can’t go wrong with any of the pickups you mentioned.

I am not a real big fan of the Fender Rumble Amps (just my opinion). To me, they have more of an overall scooped voice compared to other amps. Yes, I am an Ampeg fan boy! Regardless, try playing with the voicing options and maybe more drastic eq (cutting low and high bands more) before swapping pickups. Just my 2cents.

I recently bought a DiMarzio Model P for a parts bass and it is a really hot pickup and pretty aggressive IMO. I like it, and would gig it in any P bass appropriate setting. I'll add though that the other two are certainly fine choices, I just don't have any first hand experience with them.

I went the other way, from QPs to Geezers... they brought a couple of old Ps back to life, and man do I love the whole solderless thing. Jimmy M helped me decide on trying them out, and I’m sure glad I did.

Pickup for cover band; yes go with the EMG Geezer.
Not too anything, it's just right in the mix, simple, good price, easy to install, used by pros, just a good pickup that has been around for years now and is proven to work well.
I've started using a Fender Parts P-bass with the Geezer over the past 6 months in my cover band playing a few times per month; used my Music Man USA Sterling H and 5h for yeas, and don't miss them at all tone/sound wise. I tune BEAD on p-bass 4 string; no muddy ness, just get the right strings and nut set up, so for drop tuning the EMG Geezer works well.
Nice ! I’ve been gigging a Ray34, but I have to say it’s hard to beat a good Precision Bass tone .

So, based on what everyone has said, it seems like a strong bias to EMG GZR’s. I’m honestly glad to hear that they are more vintage sounding than I had believed.
Here’s a question- would I have to enlarge the tone knob holes on my bass to accommodate the tone knobs if I went with the GZR’s?

I have a DiMarzio DP122 in one bass, a Fender Original 62 in another, and an original 62 p bass with well, an original 62 pickup :)

The DiMarzio bass has round wounds and is a wild ride, big loud middy grind.

The bass with the Fender Original 62 pickup is wearing LaBella 1954 flats and has a Motown sound, loud and woody.

The original 62 p bass goes back and forth as far as strings but has a quieter vintage output and tone but would expect that from a 58-year-old bass.

That's all I got :)

I also have a Yamaha Attitude II bass with stock pickups. I did a blindfold test with some bass player friends where they listened to each of the basses mentioned. They all picked the stock Yamaha pickups as the best overall.

Doesn't the Attitude 2 have Dimarzios in it? I could have swore it did but I don't own one to check offhand.

I went from the SPB-1 to the Fender CS '63 and now to the EMG passive P pickup and I couldn't be happier.
It seems the EMG has given me a wider range of tone. Now if I boost highs, the highs are there, same with lows and everything in between.
I guess for my use it allows me to sculpt the tone with the preamp a lot easier. I rarely play it with the tone wide open when using rounds, I kind of set it 1/3 to 1/2 and it sounds great. YMMV.
