False advertising?

I'm guessing a lot cover band haters never had to make a living playing music. Just sayin'😊
When I was in college in the 70's, a guitar player I played with and I were music majors studying jazz, but we were in a band that played everything. The "serious" jazzers used to look down their noses at us because we played "pop" music. We used to laugh because while we were out playing 3 or 4 nights a week, they were slinging hamburgers and manning the counters at 7-11.

The truth is that there aren't many people who can write good songs and there are even less who can write a whole night's worth of good songs. Most original bands are boring. And people who point out that a band like The Who is an original band are just being childish. Yeah, there are a tiny percent of original bands that actually write good music, but you aren't The Who. Frankly, I don't even want to hear an entire night of music from bands I really like, let alone some local originals band.

Ok, maybe a little more info to clarify. This was a " music on the square" type of event, funded by our local parks department. So we did not have to buy a ticket, hence I was fine leaving when it was clear that what was advertised was not what was being played. As for their originals; I already mentioned that the band was tight and well rehearsed, but as is the case with many originals bands, each song sounded almost identical to the previous song. And I know that originals bands have a certain dedicated following, but at the same time, much of the local originals music I hear is just not very good.

Someone mentioned that they are more a player than a listener, and that describes me too. I play in a busy band that normally gigs once a week, and we do all covers. My main interest in seeing other cover bands is to enjoy the skill of the players, and to see how faithful their rendition is to the one we all know. And I realize that all hit songs were originals at some point in time, but even the most successful song writers usually produced a lot duds along the way to finding a few hits.

Thump on,

If I didn't care too much for what a band was playing, its repetitive nature, or it just didn't resonate with me, I probably would've just left.

I don't get starting a thread about it, but that's fine. I doubt I would've felt I'd been misrepresented by false advertising; The band may have been transitioning from covers to more originals. It happens, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

Not late breaking news; Not even on a slow news day.

I played in several cover bands. My fear was always to treat the songs with authenticity. If you play "TNT" make sure it rocks!! Don't slap bass on "Drive My Car". I never wanted the covers to sound like some Holiday Inn act from the Seventies. I never had an audience react negatively to an AC/DC song, or
" Enter Sandman", you must have the right attitude!!

No. Facts exist, so it’s better to present opinions as opinions.
Actually, pretty much all facts are actually just opinion. e.g. it is my opinion that the earth is a globe, though opinions vary. I confess that one site I've frequented had a hard and fast rule: If you did not state something as an opinion you were required to post a link to an internet site that supported your statement. It was sort of anal, IMO. Some of us tried to include a sig line that said, basically, "The above post is opinion." Nope. they forced us to hand type it in every post that didn't have a link to a source on pretty much anything. It got pretty funny.

I just cut posters slack on anonymous forums. I assume every post is opinion. After all, none of our posts are "News articles".

Of course, all of the above is just my opinion. :)

I just use these guys as my holy grail of cover bands.

I recently went to see a cover band at an outdoor venue. Their promo material specifically said they were a "cover band" playing music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Their entire first set were originals with no covers. They sounded pretty good for a 3 piece, and were well rehearsed, but of course nothing was familar. We left after the first set.

My feeling is, if you say you're a cover band, play covers.

1. Was the band good?
2. If I was really miffed I might have asked a waitress if this was the band that was advertised or a different band?
3. Why did you go to this event? Did you know the band that was advertised?

Just my experience: Most people actually prefer covers. They tend to want to hear stuff they know. My band plays a lot of songs that people sing along with. People like that. If you say you are a cover band, but play an entire first set of originals, it's like advertising an action movie as a comedy, but nothing funny happens for the first half of the movie. It's false advertising. IMO.

That's an extremely low bar. You can find an internet site that supports any dumb :poop: anyone might come up with.

It should be pretty obvious if a post anyone makes is an opinion or rooted in verifiable rationality.

You'd think so, but I've found that not to be the case, especially in the last ten years or so. It wasn't that long ago that calling someone a liberal was universally taken as an insult, and don't even get me started on calling them a "socialist". Now, people wear those labels as badges of honor. We're in a weird world right now. You have to bring receipts for pretty much any claim, no matter how crammed with common sense it may be.

That's kinda what makes forums fun nowadays, but there is also much greater risk of being cancelled.

Well with the amount of hand wringing that arose when I mentioned that a comment was just someone’s opinion, you wonder who are the fragile ones in this equation. And I was *agreeing* with said opinion FFS.

Nailed it. BTW, your post reminded me of a friend of mine who played one of his "originals" at his one man show a couple of weeks ago. He said, "here's a song I wrote called [I don't remember the name]". He proceeds to hit his "band in a footswitch" and it plays a bunch of chords and he noodles on his electric guitar to the chords until the "song" is done. Sheesh.
