Fender Custom Shop... am I missing something?

You only get to choose from the 49 colors they offer. That's probably the best part of the Mod Shop.

I just read this on the ModShop page today:

"It’s your last chance to order custom shop pickups, Sienna Sunburst finish and matching Mystic Lake Placid Blue & Dakota Red headstocks before they’re gone.” (apparently this is guitars only?)

Let’s see what else you can’t choose:

Ash body
Only two colors for roasted pine body
Jazz neck width on a P bass or vice versa
Bridge
Tuning machines
Slab fingerboards
Gold hardware on basses
Matching headstocks on basses
No natural finish
5 strings
Telecasters offer a 50th color!!!!

In other words they are taking the parts used in AmPro instruments and giving you a choice of neck profile, pickups and colors.

Yeah, no. I'm not placing any sort of CS order. This thread was more about wondering why a Custom Shop calls itself that when it is not! Am I the only one who finds this out of line??

Fair enough.

And yes, Fender calling themselves a “custom shop” is a huge misnomer. A more apt name would be “Fender Recreations.”

I was disappointed in the neck options. I would have loved a Mod Shop fretless, better tuner options and headstocks.

I just discovered I can get a vomit green PJ bass from the mod shop with either a roasted maple or full rosewood neck, and I can always just stick a preamp in there afterwards. I didn't even know I wanted that colour until I saw it.

My mission is over I take back everything bad I said about them.

I have been complaining about the lack of 5 strings since day 1.

Its silly.

We are at the point 50% of players are using a 5. Surely their sales would tell them the market for it. Though I guess you see more non-Fender 5ers.

I would guess its closer to 20%, maybe a bit less, , but that is still substantial.
