First Overdrive Pedal

Someone here on talkbass recommended the Solidgoldfx Beta MKII to me a while back for my first tube overdrive pedal. Not sure you're looking for a tube distortion, but I just love this pedal! It also has a preamp mode which sits rather nice in the mix as well.

The dude from Gojira and the dude from Slipknot both use a KHDH Abyss distortion. A pedal I until googling had never heard of. Sounds alright. I'd personally get an MDB-2 from Damnation Audio if I was looking for all around grind/distortion.

The KHDK abyss would absolutely be the one I would go for....if it wasn't like 200 bucks. Same thing with the MDB-2

There are a few MBD's that show up in the classified here that are used and around $150. If I were you I would rethink the Orange Crush Bass amp as it is 100watts and if you intend to ever play out, that isn't anywhere near what you need for that type of music. Gran yourself an old Peavey head and at least a 410 cab. You'll save enough money to buy the distortion pedal.

You don't just buy an OD and be done if you really care for OD sounds.

Hey y'all, as the title says, I'm looking to finally dip my toe into the world of effects pedals, and I want to get an overdrive/distortion pedal first.

For context, I'm playing a Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray4 and I'm mainly looking to play metal (Gojira, SOAD, Slipknot, etc.) Because I'm a bit of an obsessive git, I already looked at a lot of demos and my options atm are:
  • Fulltone OCD
  • Wayhuge Green Rhino
  • Boss ODB-3
  • Earthquaker Devices Plumes
Of course, if you got any other suggestions, please do share! Although keep the pedal bellow $150 USD (I have to account for shipping)

Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone for the replies! After watching too many demos, I think I'm now stuck between the Fuzzrocious Demon, Li'l Fella, or the EHX Hot Wax. Thoughts?

I love my Fuzzrocious Demon! Listen to some Thrice, I think that is what he uses. The song " Just Breathe" is a good example of his bass tone.

Welcome @Gloompunk
Source Audio Aftershock is 20 bucks over your budget but is well worth it as your first overdrive, preamp, distortion pedal - it is actually 2 pedals in one. It has dual digital engines based on all the popular and classic models that you can modify with the Neuro App from your phone or computer. It comes preloaded with 6 great sounds but there are literally thousands in the Neuro Cloud uploaded by users around the world you can access for free.

The Southampton Fifth Gear is a solid choice for a first (because dirt is a rabbit hole) overdrive for bass and guitar. You can sometimes find them used within your budget.

Got mine used for $120 i think. it was a few weeks back and can either be a core “tubey ” sound or full OD (not gnarly distortion in my rig but I play flats on a pbass mostly.)

Starting where you are, I’d go to the classifieds and buy one of the $100 Source audio aftershocks that are for sale if they can ship it.
