Fractal Audio Club

I'd like to join the Fractal club!

I've been using an AxeFx 2XL + for guitar for the last couple years and I'm trying to take it more seriously for bass. Every time I've tried it, it's been lack luster compared to my bass board for bass tones only.

I did have a breakthrough yesterday after skimming this thread. It was a "duh" moment for me because I rarely record with spilt signals.

The signal path was a crossover block to FAS bass and a bass cab on one side (probably the 1x15 SV) and a guitar rig for the other side. (I think I did a Solo 100 into a recto cab or Marshall cab) into a compressor/dynamics block for some minor limiting.

By far the best result I've had with this unit for bass for a drivey kind of tone.... Next stop would be getting something cleaner and more suited to slap tones. Any tips for those tones?

I forgot to add I have the Sonic Drive Studio video cued up to watch for some other pointers.

I'd love to get the AxeFx to do a more modern slap tone as I have drive tones covered and I've been mostly happy with warmer fingerstyle tones I've been able to get.

for my slap tones I used the Band Commander and Bassman models with graphic and parametric EQs.

Hey gang,

Just wanted to share this for any new Fractal users out there because I know the bass-related info online can be lacking.

A great starting point (or end point?) for setting up a bass patch (that isn’t crushing bass sounds for metal)

Cool video. I never like the Mesa 400 model. Sounds much too muddy for me. I prefer FAS bass or just only use Tube Pre for bass without any cab.
But most of the time I don't use my Axe fx for recording bass and go direct and use a VST ampeg Porta model from Brainbox sometimes. Sounds better than the Axe fx model for me.

Nicely done! :) And I like the add in of the Flying Colors riff! Dave LaRue is awesome and a nice guy as well!
Stay healthy,

I prefer the FAS Bass as well.

While watching the video I realized they modeled the Xotic RC Bass. I‘ll have to give that one a try. I wish they would have done the BB instead!

Hi, hello there. I recently got interested in the modelling pedals. I've used digital multi effects before, but always went back to analogue pedals. Now what got my attention was the ability to make my own models. Can you do that with the fractal stuff? There's quite a few floating around used for a good price. Like several fx8 pedals.

Thank you. That gets fractal in the bottom of the list.
Or more specifically the FX8, in your case. The FX8 is discontinued, older tech and features, with no amp or cabinet modeling.
For that matter, none of the Fractal products have "profiling" features to capture amp/drives/etc. a la Kemper, Quad Cortex, ToneX.
The flagship AxeFXIII does feature tone matching, but that only captures the EQ profile of a tone (not distortion, not dynamics).

Some prefer their amp/cab sims fully modeled ( like Fractal ), while others like to create and/or search for fully profiled captures ( like Kemper ).

Good luck!

FINALLY, latest firmware update includes a bona fide Mutron envelope filter model, with more parameters for fine adjustment. Better late than never.
That’s the best update since years. I never understood why the never had a dedicated envelope filter algo in all those years. Hope it sounds good on bass. Any bass clips of it?

Updated to the new firmware to check out the new Envelope Filter that's one of types in the Filter block. I enjoyed messing with it for an hour or so. It's got nice flexibility and pretty straightforward parameters. Never owned a Mutron, so no idea how it compares. Placing it after fuzzed bass tones got me some fun simulated synth sounds.

Key feature is the selectable location of the input detector circuit:
"The detector source is selectable between the block input or any of the hardware inputs. This allows
placing the filter after an Amp or Drive block but using the instrument input as the source."

Nice one! Looking forward to giving it a go.

Now the only thin that’s left for me is…

- SansAmp BDDI V1
- SansAmp DP-3X
- Whooly Mammoth
- BrassMaster
- Green Russian Muff
- GK 400 / 800 RB
- Acoustic 360
- Peavey Mark III/IV (?)
- Ampeg SVT 3 Pro
- MESA 115 Cab
- 1176 / Origin Cali76 Comp
- LA2A Comp
- Yamaha SPX90ii Symphonic Preset
- NEVE Style EQ

… a boy can dream.

Rumor has it that the SansAmp Geddy Lee will be getting modeled by Fractal, but unsure of the exact version. Assuming it's the 2112 DI, but we'll see. Keeping a close eye on this as it would be one of the more significant updates for bassists in quite some time.

on the one hand... geddy is the man and I'm sure that's a lovely pre... on the other... to go for this long with zero new bass models but then NOT get an Aguillar or Glockenklang or Ashdown or Sunn or Acoustic or Eden??? well cliff might as well punch me right in my nuts. (jk I'd be overjoyed to have geddy sansamp)

While the few models that Fractal does have aren't bad, I've gone to using my FM3 for effects only on bass, primarily the pitch block so I don't have to have basses at different tunings. Ive started using a Genzler Magellan preamp pedal with the FM3 and it really does the job.
