I'm somewhat in the camp of @dhergert in that a) I never, in my 68 years, had a private music lesson of any kind until 2019, and b) all my playing has been by ear or with chord charts (I have always been able to read music for singing). So private lessons and Simandl have been an adventure.

When I KNOW the melody I want to play, or when I am playing with others, my playing (intonation AND bowing) is better than when I am slogging through an etude by myself. So - for me - Simandl is exposing my shortcomings; that is its value. Yes, hearing chords while playing an etude would be a pleasure, but a little like training wheels. My $.02
