Double Bass Great Female Double Bassists

67 posts before Espreranza came up and an amazing 123 posts before Linda Oh was mentioned. I like her (Esperanza's) playing and singing and I can't wait to see how she matures. I've got a student headed to Berklee and I'm going to see about arranging a musical hookup when I go to visit.

I came across Linda Oh on my Esperanza Pandora station. I bought the album minutes later. I love the trumpet/bass/drums trio format; I played in this format for 2 years. It's a lotta work for sure, but very rewarding 1> if you've got the right personalities, musically and otherwise 2> once you get used to it.

Let's leave the sex and the sniping out of this and give these talented bassists some respect.

BG? thought you would never ask... Me'Shelle Ndgeocello (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) and of course, one of the best bassists ever, Tina Weymouth.

To be fair, the thread started in 2002 and Linda Oh wasn't even in this country then (she would have been about 16 too). She's amazing, isn't she? She hasn't even approached her potential yet either. Great composer, great player. Man, I'm jealous.

Not to worry boylebass, this thread has been close to the top lately!

Damon, I recently started checking out Shayna's music thanks to a earlier link on another player's site you posted. Really great, thanks, your a constant source of good info here.

My spies tell that Rhonda Smith played EUB with Jeff Beck and Narada Michael Walden at the Grammy's last Sun night.

Wow. Live on air, just Esperanza singing while playing bass - I thought I could hear TROIKA applauding after the tunes! :D

I could get really picky and say that she didn't quite 'get' a couple of notes with her voice but geez she's good - nice tone on the bass too. She sounded SO young during the interview parts...

Here's the Beck/Les Grammy's thing. I went to see Jeff Beck in SF in the late sixties, he did a Les Paul number that night I recognized, as Les Paul and Mary Ford records were very popular in my home. He knows the licks, tricks, and music of Les for sure! The harmonized vocals were done in Les's day as well, legend is that he had a couple of off stage singers nobody in the audience could see. What a kick that must have been!

Rhonda Smith on EUB in this performance (Vektor?), I can't really tell what she's up to. Sure would of like to see more of her than the drummer though! It will be interesting to hear what Rhonda does with the upright if she joins Jeff Beck's band.
