Has your opinion of JHS pedals changed?

So, Josh Scott is a great guy. No, Josh Scott is a jerk.

A third possibility occurs to me though. He looks like he's probably in his mid-30s. Which means he probably started his company in his mid-20s. Now, I'm sure there are lots of very mature 25-year olds out there, but speaking for myself, I wasn't one of them. For me, the difference between 25 and 35 was night and day.

Is it possible the dude simply grew up a bit?

I’m not saying it’s aliens, but...
it’s aliens.

Anyway, I find the JHS youtubes, and the Earthquaker youtubes to be an attempt to take the narrative about music gear away from regular joe reviewers (the guy from Vertex Effects also makes youtubes, but I don’t find his very compelling). For better or worse I’m unsure.

In other news, I’m off to watch the hilarious Anderton’s Korg Miku review again.

Has your opinion of JHS pedals changed?

No. I'm not into it.

Also I no longer listen to James Brown's recordings because he beat women. Seriously. To me, the aggregate that was "James Brown's music" is Byrdian not Brownian, thereby sparing the funk being discredited by Brown's bad behavior.

Likewise George Clinton, speaking of the funk. What a predatory, heartless jackass. Thank goodness much of "his" music actually was created by the other band members, thus sparing the P-Funk legacy.

Dr. Seuss and Dali are on my blacklist, too. It's a pretty long list. Because reliably, ours is a pretty awful species.

Once I learn of a person's dark deeds, I reject their work. It doesn't matter who they are or how great their accomplishment.

'Yeah, but what about redemption or rehabilitation?'

I don't know if there is a universal threshold.

For example, if the person was a war criminal or serial killer, frankly I don't think that their rehabilitation can stand for the lives they destroyed.

But if instead they stole other people's inventions and lied about it brazenly or indignantly, then in later years they were much more temperate, probably I still would want nothing to do with them or their work.

So my threshold for permanent rejection might not be universal, but it is so low that it includes nearly all cases.

Zombie thread, Mr Piper.

Rip the scab right off, let it bleed some more... Why?

May as well throw in my 2$ of inflation...

Josh certainly isn't the only one to start up a video-series to spin his image in the pedal community —

There's the Doctor with the rigged medical certificate. Wah 'appen? I don't mean to be a Cry Baby about it, but that whole thing gives me some Freekish DejaBlues. But wait! There's more...
No credit given for the origins of the string singin' steal [sic], either. Not sure of the timeline, whether that charge was mu-amped up before or after wah'tergate, but that he still sells the Jack'd pedal without a nod let alone a shekel to its creator is AMaZing. Ormangawd!

Seems a popular thing to do...

Got caught red-handed in shady dealings?

No problem, all is forgotten if you start up a helpful handy-dandy informative yutoob channel ...

To be honest, I'm not super sure what to think. I've heard disappointing things about Josh in the past but nothing recently. I enjoy his YouTube channel and he doesn't seem like a dick, but I don't know the guy, so who knows. If he's been closeminded, offensive or unethical in the past, I hope he has grown from that. Certainly I know I've grown from the person I was as a younger man.

I really like some JHS Pedals. I think it's a great brand.

Conversely, I've only heard (and still hear) poor things about, and from, Mike Fuller and I'm just done with Fulltone now. However would I say the same thing if he made a pedal that really appealed to me? I'd hope so.

This topic really just needs to die. I'm dismayed to see it cropping up here since it's such a played out and tedious line of inquiry. It's reddit-tier. Holding grudges against someone for stuff they did in the past is vindictive and petty. So basically it's par for the course for what we've become as a people at this point, but I'll remind everyone that it's actually the opposite of what a good person does. Add to that you don't even know the guy. Add to that the charges against him are only partially based in reality, at best. Add to that he's spent years building up the pedal community and done more to promote and help other builders than anyone, probably ever. He literally instructs people not to buy his pedals and to instead buy from some other company just to support the overall industry. No one else does that. So whatever you personally think he did in the past, which keep in mind is basically just your opinion given the vague evidence, I feel like he's atoned for it at this point.

I'm not trying to defend Josh Scott here so much as I'm trying to protect this community. On reddit for example you can't even post your cool new JHS pedal that you're excited about without opening yourself up to nasty and judgmental comments from people scolding you for supporting Josh Scott. It sucks. It's toxic and just bad. Do we really want that here? What about that new Fulltone pedal that you're psyched finally gets you the sound you've been after? Well get ready for the pedal morality police to finger wag you like a high school teacher and tell you to paint over the logo. That's what happens on every other gear website, and that's what will happen here on TalkBass if we let it. The seed of that toxicity will germinate and diminish this community. Best thing we could do would be to collectively decide not to sustain or respond to these types of threads anymore.

I defence of this thread, I wasn't looking to drum up new/old hate. I just felt that (as you have said well) that people had always regurgitated the same old hate and internet lore. I thought maybe the JHS Youtube channel had opened a window into the fact that Josh Scott is actually an ok person and maybe we could let some of that old stuff die. Zombie thread aside (and one I had forgotten I had started) I didn't mean to stir the pot. But this is the internet, and welp....
