I actually didn't really like the deads version at all until I figured out what was going on with it, but its actually pretty cool. Problem is, after listening to other GD cover bands play that song, I think the GD are the only ones who could do it the way they did it and get away with it. Thats what happens when you play with the same folks for 20-30 years.
as for the band, these guys get some good, high profile gigs that pay well...are cool to hang with, and best of all don't want to rehearse all the time (rehearsal space is an hour away in the ghetto, so I usually dread when the subject of practice comes up)
Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-Dead. Not a fan of Phil Lesh but that's another story.
I've played and still play with guys who love doing Dead tunes and some I enjoy as well but I draw the line when it comes to Funk or R&B/Soul tunes they cover that have zero funk and not even a hint of soul. It's not in them to play 'em that way and that version of Hey Pocky Way is as good an example as any. I just don't want to cover tunes like that with a Grateful Dead approach where everything is kind of lame rock version of a great soul tune.
I was really just joking about finding another band. Should have thrown up a sarcasm alert. My bad. LOL
