How do you handle tips?

I would write him back, tell him he owes me for the lost revenue because he cancelled me a month before the gig and I am now unable to work a gig on a lucrative night .... and I'd tell him I'm going to be paying him a personal visit to collect my dough. Really, you don't want to work for this miscreant anyway.

I'll get another gig for NYE, that is not an issue. I feel for the others who have to play with this guy and deal with him making it a chore rather than an enjoyable and lucrative show.

I'm usually pretty gracious when someone offers me a tip, except this one time a guy told me if i wanted to be a better bass player i should smash my left fingers with a hammer.

Not only did it not work, it hurt like no body's business. Next time i see that dude i'm gonna find out what i did wrong. Maybe let him show me the right way to do it.

And in the end that is why I backed out of his group. Just want to stay above all of the silliness.

I think you did the right thing if you aren't trapped into needing the income. I never want to feel like I'm being treated like a child, forced or controlled, and I have learned not to treat other people that way. And that sort of treatment is what makes me bail permanently from situations.

Really don't need the money enough to endure that type of treatment or behavior from anybody, let alone a 50 year old.

On this particular occasion the tip was $300. Split equally would have been $60 each, 40% over the contracted wage. I agree with a lot of what you have posted and as you are a BL your input has been very valuable to this thread. There are other factors involving the particular gig that I did not mention, some of which you have hit on in reply.

If I may can I ask you- If as a BL you take a commission for marketing, booking, PA, etc. (in this instance 20% off the top and then a 1/5 share for performance) would you split tips handed in to you by your sidemen (not out of the tacky tip jar) equally?

In this instance the BL reacted kinda slimy and not open to discussion. I was not belligerent or disrespectful, approaching the subject cautiously, away from the rest of the players as we packed up his sound system and loading it in his vehicle. It was my 3rd gig with this highly paid show band and I was about to sign on as the primary bassist (after he recruited me heavily, not only for bass but for technical skills as sound man and all things tech.) I have since declined and remain on his sub list but will hesitate to accept gigs unless all the i's have been dotted and t's crossed, even then the money must be really good and my responsibilities fully laid out i.e. I will show up on time, set up my gear, play gig up to agree upon expectations, remove my gear, get paid agreed upon amount and leave, not my normal modus operandi as I am a complete team player but given the situation very appropriate.
Were they slumming on this gig? It is early here and the coffee hasn't kicked in but if $300.00 is 40% of the contracted wage we have different ideas of what highly paid is.
