I feel my bass playing is bad even with my basic knowledge on bass

It's not about 'basic' versus 'extra stuff'
You are better when you play what you have practiced.

your attention is a limited resource.

when you play 'extra stuff' you have to pay extra attention to how you execute the new fingerings and choose notes
this attention has to be drawn from other areas like your timing and your ability to listen.

When playing 'basic' roots and octaves you don't need to pay so much attention to execution, because you have those fingerings down well
so your attention is freed up to listen, follow the groove, and play with some considered feeling.

no need to feel bad
just practice the 'extra stuff' until you need less attention to play it.
then you can re apply that attention to timing and listening.
I get what your saying but playing less and let other musicians contribute is better that trying to play the extras especially for some gigs that requires piano, guitar, vocals, etc to be played

...actually, that can be said of every instrument.

I say that because I am a tenor sax front man...I am expected to play like Brecker or Coltrane on every song. I can blister for sure....but my best is simple melodic grooving with big tone. People and musicians rarely get it. Pregnant pauses, simple lines that groove---make an outstanding and interesting lead player. But, what do i know...

playing less because it will help others sound better is a good reason
playing less because you fear yourself sounding bad is a good reason to practice.
I agree but honestly I have good groove when I play the basics so you can't necessarily say that is a fear of sounding bad when I'm being considerate for the other musicians and honestly a bad musician is one who does too much and step on other musicians but I know how to make a good bass line without using crazy licks and Paul McCartney is a good example of this

I feel I don't sound that good so I wanted to know...what should i do to feel better and to continue growing as a bassist
I agree but honestly I have good groove when I play the basics
A bassist with 1 year of playing who sees the value of simplicity is awesome in my book.
I'm confused though...why is it exactly that you feel you don't sound good?

For the record I've been playing bass for 12 years and guitar for 30 and even though people tell me I am good, I still think I have a long way to go most days. Musicians and artists are almost always our own worst critics. Then again I don't practice enough to improve very much anymore, but that's my own fault...
