Is it worth buying this "Squier with upgrades"?

If you can come up with 220 just save a little longer. 300 bucks put you into a realm of very nice new basses by Ibenez, Yamaha, Squier, etc. from half a dozen reputable places. It would be worth an investment of your time to go try as many as possible. You can find a comfy neck, a tone, shape and color that pleases you and it will have a warranty. They may even throw in a basic set up.

Why buy some ones basically worthless headache?

Usually you can't expect to get extra money out of your upgrades, and what he upgraded, if it even can be considered upgrades in the words true sense (for instance I am not sure weather the Wilkenson tuners, which is a budget brand, would even be better than the stock ones), generally is pretty insignificant in terms of providing any real improvements to the instrument.

In my opinion the one thing that really improve a budget instrument is swapping the usually cheap sub par stock pickups with some quality ones, everything else will mostly just be glitter and sparkles.

And who want's to pay for glitter and sparkles?

In other words and shorter terms, no, in that specific case it would definitely not be worth it!

What if this bass somehow had the sound of the funk machine??

It makes me wonder what if the ox’s first bass they made out of plywood and lumber survived and went to auction??? Might sound similar to this bass:

It’s a hand made instrument. The hardware had been custom fit. It’s had a custom hand polished paint job. The pickups and hardware are of the highest quality of imported metals and plastics. ULTRA RARE!

I am seeing this correctly, right: seller literally cut the tuner to fit the headstock?!?! Plz tell me I’m seeing things...

Gotta love TB! Always good for some new craziness to get a good laugh from!

So yeah, OP, it already sounds like you’ve decided to walk... I would just like to concur with the masses that that is probably a wise decision. Lots of really solid options can be found in a similar price range.

Good luck & thanks for sharing!

That.....is a parts bass. Guitar fetish body.

P Bass Lightweight Body Seafoam Green Finish

Squier Affinity neck with labeling removed.

Wilkinson tuners which are awful.

Pass.....

Wilkinson tuners.....which are terrible. I bought the same set and had one that would slip all the time.
I don’t believe that Wilkinson tuners are bad, they actually get good reviews, I have them on my 90s P bass and they work just fine, stays in tune..maybe the black ones have issues??

The way I see it, if you're on the fence about a $210-$250 bass, simply don't buy it. What is attracting you to this bass and making you think you want/need it? Is it going to fill a "void" in your current stable, or do you just have cash during a hole in your pocket and simply want something now?

I'm more of a quality over quantity guy, but learned that the hard way over the years by jumping on instruments simply because it was a "good deal" at the time. For all the "good deals" I've jumped on, I could have been patient, and saved that money until something really nice came along and ended up with something really special.

First time poster looking for some help. I'm looking for a pbass. This local guy is selling this Squier for $250 but I think I can talk him down to $210-220. He says that he's upgraded the pickguard, tuners (Wilkinson), pots, knobs, and "electricals". He says the only thing not new is the bass body, neck, and pickups.

The hang up I'm having is whether or not to grab it. I know I can get a VM squier jaguar for $250 but how would the hardware compare to this guy? Also I prefer passive to active pickups and I'll probably eventually change the ones on the bass I'm posting about. So all in all maybe $300 invested in this guy which is the price of the VM pj bass Squier. Not sure which to go for. Any help would be appreciated.

upgraded pickguard? what the hell is that? :D

and upgraded knobs...

pfff.

no decal on the neck...

NEXT!

Seriously, pass. That guy is a dreamer.

I think the OP has gotten the message.

If you are willing to buy used, and it sounds as though the OP is, you can find much better deals. Check out the TB classified section, also retail stores like Guitar Center have pages of used basses online and will send them to your local store. Play before you buy, and never buy an instrument that has had it's badging removed. That's an indication that the seller is ashamed of its provenance (or it's stolen).

Yes, but he did such a professional job!

First off, welcome to tallkbass. As others have already stated, pass. You should be able to find a good used Squier P bass in the $150 to $175 range on line. Then for you can replace pick up with whatever you want for about a $100 bucks, give or take.
