The entirety of Buncombe County (where Asheville is the county seat) has neither power nor phone as I write this. Large chunks of the area are isolated due to bridges and roads getting washed out in floods. Even if he's OK (and I hope he is) he's got better things to do with scarce bandwidth than log in here.

I’m nowhere near the storm and I have better things to do than log in here. Still, the odds of hearing from someone on TB are greater if you tag them.

There’s a good chance he got evacuated. I know many on our side of the mountain did. A dam failed on our side and flooded the whole city of Newport. It drove the lake up 20 feet. This is the main interstate(i40 East) that crosses the mountain from Tennessee to North Carolina. It will likely be shut down for a year or more.

Yup. The highway message boards on I-40 and I-85 are currently telling people that no travel is permitted in western NC. The state's traffic map (drivenc.gov) currently has a bright red banner across the top that says "DO NOT TRAVEL IN OR TO WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA: All roads in Western North Carolina should be considered closed and non-emergency travel is prohibited. I-40 is impassable in multiple locations. I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line. Travel in this area for non-emergency purposes is hindering needed emergency response."

I believe it. Many bridges washed out on our side too.

We have actually been getting more rain and a little more is forecasted. It could get worse.
Yeah. Periodic rain up through Wednesday. Today was rain-free so I cleared debris from the yard and driveway. The air has been Louisiana bayou levels of swamp for two days now though and some large animal died in the neighborhood that I can't see but sure can smell.

I sent him a text as soon as I heard the situation was deteriorating, but haven’t heard back. My friends in the area all mentioned cell service as basically non existent, so I’m sure that’s a big hurdle

I live in Charlotte proper and we were without power for 3 days, but that’s nothing compared to what the folks our James’ way are facing

Cell tower service in Asheville started reactivating on Saturday night. It's possible he's not within range of a working tower yet, or that the network is too overwhelmed by traffic right now. Fortunately they're enabling Emergency Roaming Service in western NC, which basically means a mobile will have full access to whichever provider is within reach: Verizon customers don't have to wait for Verizon service to be sufficiently restored, etc.

Thx for the concern; it has been one hell of a week here in Asheville.

There is chaos and loss and destruction and carnage everywhere. No water, power, cell, all of the roads & infrastructure are destroyed for what looks like will be a loooooong time. All schools are closed indefinitely and the corporate disaster prdators are swooning the town selling water for profit trucked in from the midwest like vultures on roadkill.....

I'm safe and dry and riding it out with a shotgun under one arm and my old ALCOA bass under the other with limited communication......eating cats.

Let us know if there's anything we can do to help. I can't imagine what that could be but I'm sure many of us would make the effort.

Did a delivery to Georgia today. About 100 miles of roadway West of Columbia SC and well into Georgia was without power...hence no petrol.
I was calculating a side trip to Atlanta if I couldn't find gas in rural areas.
BAM! All of a sudden, 50 miles out of Augusta there was power (and therefore gas).
Do not take long drives in this part of the south right now!
