I didn't look to see if the original "Cantaloupe Island" has been discussed but I was checking out some of the many, many versions done over the years. As a palate cleanser I went back to the original HH version and was once again reminded of how great the originals of the classics are and how so many of the others don't really measure up. I'm playing it as a special request for an upcoming gig and will try to access as much or the original vibe as I can convey, especially the slow, hypnotic groove.

Yup. It's easy to kind of dismiss those songs that are played by all of the beginning jazz combos, but if you go back and listen Herbie Hancock's "Takin' Off" (Watermelon Man) or Joe Henderson's "Page One" (Blue Bossa), you are reminded how good those recordings actually were.

Latest box set binge. All feature Grachan Moncur III on trombone and Jacke McLean on alto. From 1964 two sessions under Jackie’s name, two under Grachan’s. From 1967 two more sessions under Jackie’s name. Bassists are Eddie Kahn, Larry Ridley, Cecil McBee, Scotty Holt and Bob Cranshaw. Also present: Bobby Hutcherson, Tony Williams, Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Billy Higgins, Rashied Ali.

All Mosiac sets are limited pressings, I have #4956 out of 5000. Ordered mine just in time, eh?
