Journey Makes R&RHOF, Possible Performance with Steve Perry

I'd like to see Steve at the awards for this. I know Arnel's they're vocalist, but it was Steve's vocals over the years that helped get them the nomination, not really Arnel's. So based on that alone, I think he should be the one to perform with them for something like this. The one that has me baffled though is Tupac being nominated. Don't get me wrong, he was great at what he did, but he was rap, not rock, so it doesn't make sense to me for him to be in the R&R HoF. That'd be like nominating Metallica or Dream Theater into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Just doesn't make sense.

So this thread has me playing Journey. Got me to thinking. Back in the 80's when I was in my "music snob" phase.... Neil Schon did a jazz/rock/fusion album with somebody that I played the grooves off of. That ring a bell to anyone? Would like to find that if it is available still.

I don't get the hate for Journey. No, they weren't the Beatles, but:

- great musicians
- great singer
- some very good songs, and certainly hits

Did they "sell out" some so they could make money? So did Yes, so did Rush, so Starship, so did a LOT of great musicians and bands.

Sometimes "selling out" is substituted for more successful than other folks. Pretty sure Journey was performing for a living and the idea that they might want to be successful at it is seen as a negative...
:D

Steve should definitely be there if he wants to. After all, he's the one the "new guy" is trying to sound like.

Hey, I LIKE a lot of their tunes, and the musicianship was always stellar.

They certainly took a "journey" from the early fusion/prog rock releases to selling out stadiums and arenas and heavy rotation on FM radio and MTV.

I don't see anything wrong with a band moving into a more pop-oriented songwriting format and winning the hearts and minds of mainstream audiences. I like their later popular albums a lot. I saw them live in their heyday, they flat nailed it. Steve Perry sounded better live than he did on the recordings.

Like Rolie, original drummer Aysnley Dunbar had quite the resume when he helped found Journey. He's still kicking around somewhere and also deserves an invite and induction.

I wonder if Perry can still do it. It would be weird if Arnel Pineda sounds markedly better. They should do a medley and let Perry, Pineda, and Castronovo take turns at the lead vocals. That would freak some folks out.

Grand Master Flash is already in, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't about narrowly defined genres, it's about people making a mark in music.

They did a few albums together and the bassist was the great Colin Hodgkinson.
