Get a Mustang! Or a cheap Hofner or vintage Vox (cheap) or similar hollowbody.
Didn't seem worth starting a new thread but...
Can you confirm anything in regards to Paramore?
From your Instagram it looks like there's a new album in the works and Zac Farro is back. Will you be playing bass on the album as well as producing?
Hey Justin, Okay so something from Mutations might be diggin' something up that's a little old but I've been wondering for quite a while what was used for Diamond Bollocks? Especially for the distortion? That's one of my favorite tracks of all time! With one of my favorite basslines ever! And you are a personal hero of mine! Keep on keepin' on my dude.
Also, has the Diabolik replaced the b:assmaster for good?? I already have a depth charge but wanted another brass master type fuzz and was curious if the Diabolik was truly able to capture the mojo of the b:assmaster all in a fraction of the size??
Hi!
Thanks man, really nice of you to say all that! I'm a big fan of Diamond Bollocks, and have never once been asked about it, I don't think. Good looking out! The heavy section is a P-Bass with a Sans GT2 into a B-15. Nothing fancy. The other sections are my Schecter Hellcat custom and my Vox Cougar (that song is three songs edited together on tape, by the way).
Diabolik may not be a complete B-assmaster replacement, but I love it. Prescription Depth Charge might be more like the genuine article, tbh. I've got one of those too, and it's pretty cool...I think I may have lost it though, haven't seen it in a while. I used it a bunch with NIN. B:assmaster is more fully featured, but doesn't have quite the low-end heft of the Diabolik. You should just get a Diabolik anyway. They're kinda special, and not very expensive.

No problemo! Thank YOU for giving me so much great music to listen to throughout the years. Yeah I feel like a lot of peeps aren't too familiar with that track in general... might be partly due to its absence from the US release of Mutations. Was it created after the album released? Whoa! One of the things that stands out to me is the structure and how each part sounded like it could be a separate track haha! Have those tracks ever been released individually??!
Nice and simple, I respect that... I remember the GT2 being your bread and butter back in those days. Didn't think it could get so nasty while maintaining lows like that though! That's another one I need to check out! However, I noticed that the GT has since disappeared from your rig in recent photos and it seems like Darkglass gear was added to fill the void. Has the GT2 been dethroned by the VMTD??
Yeah I really dug all the clips I heard of the Diabolik, definitely has a unique spin on the brass. Anything tailor made to your specs has got to be worth checking out. Aw man, that's A total drag, the Depth Charge is shaging nasty (pardon my French)!! I'd probably cry if I lost mine ha and they are so hard to come by now too... Do you want my depth charge?
Hey,
No, Diamond Bollocks was created at exactly the same time as the rest of the album. It just ended up as a hidden/bonus piece, even though we spent more time and effort on it than probably anything else on the album. We've also played it live a handful of times, which was really fun. No simple task, I assure you. No, the components that make up the piece have never been released individually, and likely never will. Yes, I like the GT2 very much, and still pull it out from time to time. I guess my problem with it is that I was always looking for more midrange, hence other things caught my ear in the years since...i.e. Darkglass, Rusty Box, Beta, and a bunch of others. Even my old Tubeworks Blue Tube, which I used a long time before the GT2 even. I still like that pedal though. Thanks, yeah: the Diabolik is great, I do recommend it for what it does. I found my Depth Charge, btw. Thanks for the concern!
I often wonder, since I'm utterly fascinated by the dynamics hidden in that little box, if there are any tracks you've ever recorded that feature the Crowther Prunes?
Hello Justin!
I was curious what you tend to go to the Traynor for, and whether it's modded. I recently picked up a 1970 YBA-1 and am loving it for bass.
Funny enough, I also picked up some speakers (2 Eminence 130040B 15") that the seller said you had previously owned to load into an old Acoustic 402 cab that I found on the street - sounds great with the YBA-1! Any recollection of those and did you use them on anything I could check out?
Love your work and Thanks for sharing your experience!
John
Hi JMJ!
Regarding phasers... youseem to have quite a few and use them frequently...
That clip of the Mustang with the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase from a few days ago on Instagram was pretty sick. Are you aware of there anything out there that could get close to that saturated and wet sounding without having to spend well into the 4 digits?
Thanks!
