Kiss Sells Catalog, IP to Pophouse Entertainment for $300 Million

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Kiss have sold their music catalog, name, image and likeness — including their iconic makeup designs — to Pophouse Entertainment, the Sweden-based music investment firm behind ABBA’s “Voyage” hologram show. While terms of the deal were not officially announced, Bloomberg and Associated Press said it was worth upwards of $300 million.

In a statement, Pophouse plans to promote the group’s “iconic music, enigmatic personas, and expressive imagery for generations to come.” Indeed, news of the deal arrives just four months after Kiss unveiled plans for an avatar concert similar to ABBA’s with digital versions of the group.
 
As a KISS fan since '78 I was sad to hear about this avatar thing. I kind of think they're dumb but some people might enjoy it.

Just sad there will be no more concerts to attend, met some great people over the years and were always fun.

Not a common opinion here, that's ok.
Gene has already played a few gigs with his band. It may not be the spectacle KISS was but younger guys may not have the vocal issues Stanley does.

That's true and I understand the need to retire, I'd even make the argument they could have done it sooner. But I'll still miss looking forward to the "next time."

But to me, this avatar idea seems to tie into the "virtual" world of gaming, VR headsets, and things like that that I have zero interest in. To me that's a different generation or mindset and those are the folks that may be interested in this.

I think they're over-estimating the appeal and interest in the "brand" to younger generations but I'm frequently wrong.
 
Also. thje guys gets older, and it is way easier to leave money to their inheritance, than have them to struggle with catalog rights (which can be a long term investment for a company)
Totally - that's a good chunk of change. I'd lock it in. Who knows what kind of income they could hope to see in the future from licensing that catalog? (The fact that it seems a tad lower than I would expect might give some indication...)

Just anectdotal, but I am often very surprised by the knowledge "kids" in their 20's have about music from my generation (70's and 80's). When I have friends and family over, we generally have 3 generations hanging on my back porch, and I always get a game of "round robin" going. We go around the porch and everyone has to pick out a tune and we all listen....just a couple rules, you aren't allowed to skip or pass your turn, and no one gets to complain or criticize anyone else's choice (the only thing not allowed, since it's my porch, is absolutely no Stevie Nicks! :D )..any and all genre's are open. It's always a fun way to get a variety of music to listen to, and I always hear something I hadn't heard before. Anyhow, it's amazing to me how often the younger people in the crowd call out a tune of "classic rock"...Van Halen, Boston, Led Zep, ZZTop, Hendrix, AC/DC, etc....stuff that I would have assumed was completely off their radar.

It was a trend years ago.

A lot of top legacy artists including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Bowie’s estate already sold their catalog.

It makes sense from perspectives of taxation, timing, and estate planning.

Will the holographic Gene start selling his holographic basses after he "touches" them once?
