Kubicki club, part 2

Same here. I'm not sure I've ever had a bass with an active eq section that didn't hiss a little when you really turned it up. Even my new Dingwall with the Neve pre still hisses a little at extreme treble boost. Is there such a thing as a bass preamp that doesn't hiss at full treble boost? Never had a bass like that!

I just tried my Kubicki. I would say the preamp is average in the noise department. Passive is not as noisy from a treble hiss perspective, but the noise floor is comparable to active if you turn the your amplifier gain up to match the volume of the active setting.

Perhaps there is something malfunctioning in your board? You said the pickup pan did NOT have a center detent, right? If that's true, then something ain't right, and perhaps somebody already tried to "fix" it. This makes me think of something I'm hoping isn't too hard to do. I know the pickup leads plug straight into the board with a Molex looking connector. For troubleshooting purposes, how cool would it be to make a connector that mates to the pickup leads and let's you solder the ends to an output jack? In other words, you'd bypass the board. Even better, the pickup leads would go to a 3-way switch, then to an ouput jack. Just a thought!
I've never had a hissing issue with a G&L L-2000 pre.

I've never had an issue with my Aria SB-1000 either, however, it doesn't boost treble. It's more of a buffer circuit. Isn't the same true of the L2K pre? You can only cut, right? There is no way to "add" treble like in a more traditional boost/cut setup. It's been a while since I had my G&L so maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

I think that's correct. The L-2000 pre is my favorite, as much as I have long love for the Kubicki. It's like, active... w/o sounding like an active bass. Does that make sense? Most active basses 'sound' like an active bass. The L-2000 just sounds like a great bass, active or passive.

I tried the bass with a different cable through my actual rig instead of my tiny practice amp and it was MUCH better. Hiss was negligible. Should’ve done some process of elimination before posting!

I’m realizing that I committed the cardinal sin of TalkBass and didn't include any pictures of the new bass! It was definitely played A LOT and has the bruise to show. Along with the finish on the neck being nicely worn down. The frets on it are toast though, it’ll definitely need a fret level, if not a full refret.

hot! ❤️‍🔥

It's in great shape! I like it! I also have a noisy practice setup. It's much quieter in my home studio or through my big amp. You might have a ground loop kind of issue, or just high EMI/RF where your little amp is.
Thank you! I go through instruments fairly quickly it seems so I’m unsure if I’ll keep it or not yet, but I’m enjoying getting to know it.

Looks great, that's an awesome red! Can you show the strap button on the bottom? I'm always interested to see what people come up with as an alternative to the original.

New bass in da house! my new 2024 Ex F came in a month ago after an 8 month wait. Love it. Now i snagged a 1989 Ex F fretless off reverb. Just did a set up, new strings and its all good. I will deal with the fingerboard grooves later. Sounds fine, but i will level the board anyway. I almost always play fretless but the fretted EX F changed me a bit. Now its becoming equal time on each.

Congratulations! It's a handsome pair!

Thanks. I talked to Carla at Kubicki today and she said they are swamped, 1 year in the rears now. They are hiring more people so they can get back to 6-8 month wait time. I post on FB and so many players said they had no idea you could get a new one [$4950] and only find used ones for $6-8000. I hope they got some business from my posts. Great basses, and believe me in 60 years i have had them all.

I ordered one in July and was told 8 months. Hopefully that doesn't change :)

Heads up - reasonably priced, 6-position selector switch? , signed by Phil...

I just posted a 90 FCS Factor in excellent condition over in classifieds - wasn't quite sure of the price to put up, I am flexible and trying to pay for another venture - any advise would be appreciated, or if you guys know someone that doesn't frequent this mess of a forum like they used to, please pass it along
