I was told to go ahead and get a 5 to start, if I was sure I'd use the extra string. That was 25 years ago

Ten years ago, beginner five strings sucked, but now they're not bad at all. I don't see any reason now to start on a four if you want to end up on a five.
Ok so, the 5-string will have to wait. I have decided to purchase the 4-string bass in the same series in the last moment, mostly because someone said something that made me change my mind.
I have 0 technique. According to him, starting on a 5er breeds lazy habbits since you have to move your hand less. As such, i got the SR300 to work my hand on that fretboard haha. The 5 string will have to wait for nowbut thanks everyone who participated in this thread, i now know what to look for in a 5str'
Sorry to be rude, but whoever told you that is foolish. You've been misled...if you want to start on a 5, then start on a 5. You can still return the 4-string and get a 5 though, no problem!
Depending on your budget, I don't think you can beat a used SBMM Ray 35 for the cash. I bought a used one in near mint condition for $415 here on TB. Great bass. The stingray sound isn't for everyone though.
