MARUSZCZYK basses / BACCHUS basses - Any feedback / advice?

I own a Maruszczyk Jake and I recently wrote up a fairly indepth comparison between it and my Sandberg Classic Special bass. If you're interested it's in the club Maruszczyk thread. For a tl;dr: really great bass, only fretwork seems to be not quite as perfect as it is on my Sandberg (which is PLEK'd, which may account for that). All in all a great bass, heavily customizable and at a very interesting pricepoint IMO.

I was. They are great basses. I just stopped playing Jazz basses so I sold them. Very, very high quality builds for the price. If you get one for around $1k, it will play like a top end bass that costs twice that.

Why did you stop playing jazz basses?

I played them for 15 years and once I went hardcore into session work I just never liked how they mixed. If it was an open jazz mix, no problem. If it was a really heavy mix where I could add OD, cool. But I get hired to play on a lot of stuff in between and I was not 100% happy with it on my own projects.

Really in the end, I realized besides having Pbasses, I wanted a Jazz bass that had a great slap tone but also a lot more mids when I use my fingers (which is most of the time). So I bought a Stingray Classic and now I am quite happy.

ok :)

This is the first one... pretty much a stock Jake except the neck following my specs and glossy lacquered. The standard Maruszczyk pickups are pretty good, and the double J is a beast, I love it. The volume pot is a pull/push one which makes the double J into a single coil.

Then there's the reverse P red one:

I'm currently working on putting a black pickguard on it and a John East MMSR 3-band preamp.

And the latest, the Jazz-like Jake:

A wee heads up for dealing with Adrian at Maruszczyk. He runs a small shop and English isn't his native tongue so expect short some would say abrupt answers to any questions. This is not a criticism,it's just the way he works. Customer service is a whole lot different here in Europe so don't take it personally.

His basses are great BTW

That's true. In emailing Adrian, it's best to keep it concise and to the point. He doesn't use more words than absolutely necessary, so make sure your questions are clear and as specific as possible, then you'll have no problems. He always answered my questions perfectly and was very helpful when discussing bridge options for the second bass I ordered, as well as sending examples of colours etc. Just keep it simple. I generally make a bullet list with specific questions, and that way he replies to everything accurately.

Was a few times at the Maruszczyk factory ( well it isn't that big) and they have awesome stuff. However I don't think that he can hold up to the quality of Bacchus. I have played a few Bacchus basses (never owned one :( ) and a few Maruszcyk basses, but the Bacchus sound was much better.
Also the craftmanship of those MIJ Bacchus basses is incredible. I would go with the Bacchus!

If anybody here on TB has experience with either of these 2 basses or manufacturers, can you give me some feedback on whether they are actually as awesome as they sound on the Youtube videos that are posted?

It's virtually impossible to find a retailer to try one out here in the NYC Metro area. I don't even think they have a retailer anywhere in the US actually.

I've been looking at these 2 basses for a long time now and I'm really leaning towards the
Maruszczyk ELWOOD 4A ABSOLUTION BASS - (Made in Poland)

AND / OR

BACCHUS basses (Japan) - The black oil stain look with matching headstock, the clear pickgaurd and beautiful inlays make this a really beautiful bass (IMO). The Youtube videos for these basses also have them sounding amazing.

Anybody have experience with either of these? - Thanks

Bacchus is made by the same luthiers group that makes STR basses, and you really don't get better than STR :) (obviously biased opinion ;) )

I tell you what though, I would have LOVED to grab this Maruszczyk when it was available!
