Double Bass Minor II-V question

Or...Just use the Dorian form of the A minor scale - no need to do any Math!
Thx.

The melodic minor - a minor scale with raised sixth(!) and seventh scale degrees.
The harmonic minor scale - a minor scale where the seventh scale degree is raised by a half step.
But, Classical Western Harmony, for this/that reason, did not add a minor scale with the raised sixth scale degree only.

Classical Western Harmony has been in a Harmonic Coma (tm) for almost 200years! They realized & constructed only 3 of the 4 possible combinations of notes from the 5th to the Octave , "..for this/that reason..."
Give me Dorian, or give me Death!
IMFO, of course, as always.

In my musicology exam I was asked what the basic element of harmony is.

My answer would be the falling 5th, assuming by "harmony" they're referring to the 'new' style that began around 1600.

I missed most of this thread - been busy - but what I like about it, if you'll forgive a philosophical turn, is that the discussion is about finding out what is the essence, the underyling structure, of the pieces being discussed. That's a noble pursuit, and what 'analysis' in the field of music is supposed to be.

We now return you to your regular program, already in progress. :)
