Double Bass Mooradian Cover Company is closing!

Just received word that the Mooradian Cover Company will close at the end of the year. Peter is retiring. These are (IMO) the finest, most durable bass covers made and have been made in the USA since he founded the company. I bought mine about 15 years ago and it sees heavy use almost daily and still looks like new! If you get one be sure to splurge for the delux. They're expensive but worth it. First case I've owned that the zippers didn't fail before the case wore out.
It sounds like he will still take dealer orders up through mid October so if you've been thinking about getting one of their cases you'll need to order from your dealer before then.

This is horrible news, (for us.)
I just bought my 3rd, and now last, Mooradian delux cover.
(Also - Peter and his staff were fantastic to deal with - see my Thread in this Forum earlier this year. Excellent Customer Service.)
FYI - Mooradian was started by Ron Mooradian. Peter took over at some point, and did a great job of continuing to provide excellent products and legendary Customer Service.
Thanks??

Hopefully, the new Mooradian I bought 4 years ago will outlive me. The one I had before lasted a good 20+ years.

Ah well, as a wise man once said, whatever has the nature of arising, has the nature of ceasing.

Yes, I remember Ron Mooradian. I was still using my Reunion Blues bag back then. But the zipper died before the case and by then they had moved production to Mexico so I bought a Mooradian. Peter was running it then and he made some custom cases for my baroque instruments, too. He felt that manufacturing cases in the US was becoming unsustainable and he was looking at retiring. I had hoped his daughter (Caroline?) would take over but I guess they decided to close up shop.

Wow...I need to call them today and see if they are still taking in bags for repairs. I have an old one needing a new zipper and some restitching that I've been meaning to have fixed up for ages. They built me a beautiful custom bag for my Azola a few years ago. Well, now what bags should we be looking at? Reunion Blues are nice but $$$$$$$$$$

Messina doesn't seem to be having any problems.
2 completely different company business models, in different states. Massachusets minimum wage: $12 (raising to $15/hours by 2023). Kentucky minimum wage: $7.25 hr. Messina has 1 employee (Dave Messina). Mooradian has 25 employees. And remember that is MINIMUM wage for unskilled labor. A stitcher or sewer capable of making a padded gig bag is definitely a skilled labor job, thus pays much more than any state-obligated minimum.

Thank you for pointing that out!

Well, OK (although if, as you say, skilled workers demand a higher wage, that should be true for both businesses, yes?). My only point was - here's another case company that turns out a great product that is made in the US.

My mom (in Canada) did this all her life (clothes mostly but a lot of work for upholstery which is essential padded bags). Skills yes, wages better than the minimum legally required, I don't think so. My mom only made any money when she did piece work and that was always feast or famine.

(sorry; end of editorial vaguely relevant to this conversation)

So...I'm looking to upgrade my old 3/4 bass bag. I've found a Mooradian on Amazon for $448. Then there's the Upton bag for $319, and the Gollihur for $172, Messina standard for $395...any suggestions on these or any others I may not know about?

Sorry to see the shop closing.

They don't show any DB bags in their product list??? They do have a contrabassoon bag for all you doublers :roflmao:

Not enough money in my pocket for a contrabassoon, otherwise ...
A good pickup might need several mics for that little thing. Or should I glue a piezo disk on the body?

Weird, and however repulsed one might be by the thought, you’ll have to look in the bass guitar bags section :) I should have told you in my initial post.

However, I have one of those and that’s hands down the best I’ve seen so far when speaking of bass covers.
Best
