Amazing.
I've played 3 or 4 of them, never owned one though. Of the lot, one didn't have that signature Thunderchief "oomph" of air in the low end that made them so great.
Tacoma also had a baritone acoustic guitar, I imagine those must be incredible. Same overall design.

Great story. Just recently parted with mine. They are truly a really beautiful instrument. However, a word to the wise, those spruce tops scratch if you stare at them hard enough. Very, very delicate. And I had issues with mine (even being very well hydrated) of splitting between the grains on the side and back. Both were easily fixed, but frustrating issues. Mine was a few years older than I believe the one you got is, so age may have had something to do with it. Just seemed that over the last few years with mine, she was visiting a luthier too often.

Enjoy that beaut. She is lovely.

It was a very nice gesture, to say the least.

I wonder if non-musicians just think of instruments in terms of dollars-paid amounts, and don't really "get" how emotionally connected we get to them. Giving someone a guitar or bass is a BIG DEAL to us, it's a spiritual contribution to our art and lives.

I have one that looks just like yours!!! They are great, although I don't play mine enough. They can be delicate as was mentioned earlier and they sound pretty good plugged into an amp. My wife bought mine because she thought it would be cool to take to "Pickin's". Sorry, that's what we call them in Tennessee. I think I will keep her (and the bass too).:thumbsup::thumbsup:

View attachment 1055092 A few years back, my band played a wedding for a couple that we had met at one of our gigs. Ever since they have managed to come out and party with us all over the MD/VA/WV/DC area. They quickly became "friends" to us and not just "fans".

About a year ago, the husband, Seth, told me that he also played bass. Well, that he had one. Not that he really played it. I asked him what it was and he simply said it was an acoustic bass. He was unsure of the model as it was given to him by an older family member. I asked him to send me a pic of it when he got home. Turns out, Seth had a Tacoma Thunderchief! I explained to him how nice those basses are and how sought out they are by quite a few players. I asked him if he could bring it out one night and let me check it out as I've never actually seen one in person.

Fast forward to last nights gig. They came out with a few of their friends and Seth said "hey man, your guitarist let me in the back stage area, I left you something in the back." Confused I went to check it out. I saw a black case and opened it up to find the Thunderchief! I looked to him in pure shock and awe. He said it simply collects dust at his house and he feels it should belong to me. All he wanted in return was for me to enjoy it! I'm still in disbelief. I've never received such an awesome gift from someone.
That is so cool, man. Congratulations. Friends/fans for life it seems!

Just thinking-- you may have one of the most pristine examples of that bass left in the world. I am sure few if any are essentially flawless.

Also +1 to those who have pointed out the "scratchability" of those tops. I used to sell these and they are easily marred.

Congrats and a big tip of my hat to your friends. Awesome!

Wow! Great gift. I've been GASing for a Tacoma baritone. Those Tacomas are pretty special! Congrats.
