I just ordered an Ivory TMB30. I'm a guitar player - trying to learn bass. A month ago I picked up a Mikro but am planning to sell it as it didn't seem to handle slap very well (no room to pop with the reversed pickups).
I'll plan to keep stock pickups until I get used to it (and get better to learn what I want).
I would like to do some slap / pop (as well as jazz).
Any string recommendations? I've scoured forums for days but get MIXED information.
-Tension for shortscale - I've read that thicker strings will have higher tension - and I've read that thinner strings will have higher tension (perceived) - due to winding tighter to hit the same pitch.
-Would high or low tension be better for slap? I've read low tension might slap the frets easier; I've also heard they can be sloppy and buzz too much (unsure if a lighter touch can fix this for slap).
-Hex vs Round core - this would likely tie back to high vs low tension (round being more flexible).
-Action (height) Also read mixed instructions on low vs high for slap. I'll assume that like the mikro, this will come with a good middle starting action that I should leave untouched until I gain experience.
-Lastly, do you go out of your way to buy shortscale specific strings when going with normal nickelwound? Or do you just do a 45 degree bend on the non-tapered part of a long scale string and throw 'em on?
I was thinking of going with GHS - either Boomers (hex), or their Round core Boomers. Or if anyone can confirm that GHS Bright Flats work (I think they're ground flat outside but still roundwound toward the core).
Between the two models I'm also debating if I should go with a medium vs light string width for a novice.
Thanks for any advice
