NBD: Tom Clement Fretless 4 String #454

That is a beautiful instrument! Would love to hear your impressions of those pick ups.

So far, so good. It's hard to compare to anything because I've never had dual reverse P's on anything but my 5 string (but they aren’t conventional P pickups) especially a fretless. I do like them and even they give me a pretty jazzy but thick sound. I can lean toward the bridge and get Jaco ey.

I have been struggling to adapt to the strings I chose so have some other strings on the way. Probably get some clips up once that happens. I know i need to let them break in but they just aren't comfortable for me. Guess I'm pretty picky. I usually play with a very light touch but feel like I really have to dig in with these strings. GHS Precision flats for the curious. They do sound nice.

Thanks for the reply, I have a build incoming soon that I went Bartolini b-axis PJ for the pick ups. Not a lot info online about these, I kind of went on barts reputation alone picking them. I'm glad you are liking yours so far!

I think Bartolini makes great pickups. They have made some series for different tone I didn't love but overall great stuff. Did some research and B Axis sound like a modern take on the original design. I didn't request them specifically. Tom asked what I wanted tonally from my pickups and Bart made these for my bass.

Have had this bass a few weeks now. This is my fifth bass from Tom. He builds a great bass, has outstanding communication, excellent pricing and is an all around nice guy. Been fretless free for awhile and needed a new one. Been telling myself my next fretless would be from him so after saving up... I placed an order.

  • 4 string Jon shape
  • Alder body
  • Claro Walnut top
  • Unlined Pau Ferro fretboard
  • Dual P pickups V/V/T
He gave me a build time and we are on our way. Tom creates a facebook build page and shows progress along the way. This is a page just for your bass. He also emails you pics of progress. So below is what we started with:

Here is the build page: Clement Bass

So along the way I received a picture of the fretboard radius, rough neck and body cuts, test assembly and Tom and I would discuss various options. Everything was finished well within the quoted time and below is what I ended up with. A truly great bass! Plays and sounds great. Balances perfectly and I do mean perfectly. Weighs in just under 8 lbs too. Fit and finish is fabulous and all with the price range of a modern US Fender??? This bass is exactly what I was looking for.

If you are looking for a custom bass I highly recommend Tom Clement.

Wow...I missed this thread.
CONGRATS on that gorgeous bass!

Tom is a magician. I love mine.
Be sure to check out the more-general Clement thread that is here somewhere.

How's the pau ferro board holding up? Used rounds on it at all?

Think I tested out TI jazz rounds on this with no problem. I sold this bass. Shouldn't have but did. I'm sure the pau ferro holds up well. Plus, Tom's fretboards are thick enough you could resurface 10 - 20 times and still have room.

If I needed another custom bass, I'd go straight to Tom. Great dude, great basses. Amazing turn around time. I'm doing my best to restrict purchases until I'm 100% out of debt. Very hard and this web site doesn't seem to help for some reason.

Sorry to hear you had to move it on. I come back to this one a lot as pretty close to what I'd spec out with Tom if I went for a build with him, beautiful bass.
