NBD x 2 - Basses from my Bucket List - Ritter and Dingwall

I believe Mica at Alembic holds Jen Ritter up in high regard. That`s saying a lot coming from the Alembic family.

Both of your basses are look and am sure sound/play fantastic.
Wow! That is high praise! Thank you for the kind words too.

Mate, that's a pair of stunning basses!

I refuse to believe that anyone can play an instrument that well! Damn George has got some chops!!
Thanks very much!

George is an incredible bassist and leagues beyond me. I love watching him play though and I got a kick out of watching the video while holding the bass. The downside was wondering why I couldn’t make it sound like that!

I saw your AB2 in the Dingwall thread but a double congratulations is in order! I certainly would enjoy trying out a Ritter sometime. I hope you enjoy them both for many years!

I am lucky enough to have owned a number of my dream basses. A few shocked me with how little I actually enjoyed them and I miss a few that I let go. Grateful to have 2 of my dream basses that I love and enjoy playing (both are Dingwalls).

Thanks for the kind wishes.

Have you got any photos of your Dingwall pair or any details about the basses that were dream basses but then didn’t stay?

This is my #1. Z3x 5 string, Darkglass pre, SF2 pickups. Dual density ash body, wenge accent layer, crotch walnut top. Maple neck with BEM FB. This bass has a super quick attack and a ton of grind. The neck is basically perfection.

This was a normal white Super J. I scored 1 of 10 or 20 P Pickups that Nordstrom made for these early Js that had a P routed in them. The electronics were upgraded to ACG/East EQ-01 filter-based preamp. This bass can get a lot of different tones with these electronics.

Let’s see, the non-keepers but at one time dream basses. I have had a # of Warwicks. In general, they were boat anchors and I was gigging a fair amount back then.
I have had a lot of killer Ernie Ball basses including special editions with unique wood tops. In the end, something about the pre-amps has had me move them on. I have revisited a few times but they don’t stay (I do have an Ernie Ball guitar that I love though).
I hade a Fender Custom Shop bass and I really just took it in on trade so I could sell it. I didn’t like it or get it then - I may have more appreciation now because I like Telecaster guitars now and have forgiven Fender for everything. I had a few other Canadian Dingwalls that were close to keepers years ago too.
Let’s go more into the big leagues. I had an Alembic Series 1 4 string and a Wal Mk2 five string. I have so much respect for Alembic, the history and innovation is really cool. Despite loving so many of the features on paper and loving the look of the bass - it was a “stiff” bass to play, it was hard to feel loose and in the flow, for me.
The Wal broke my heart a bit. After the Alembic, I thought this would surely be the one! I can’t say any one thing was off for me but I just didn’t play the bass much. I hadn’t had a 5 string for a few years when I got it. I thought maybe I am not meant to play 5s and that almost kept me from buying #1 Dingwall.

As far as fretless basses go, the 2 that got away are a Jerzy Drozd Obsession Legend 4 and a Stradi 4 string. They were both amazing. I have a Veillette short scale fretless now that I like a lot.

Thanks for taking the time to go into the detail. The Dingwalls are both beautiful but the Z3 is superb. What a wonderful looking bass. The dual density bodies sound very interesting too. I think Sheldon is working wonders with his basses.

The Super J with an ACG/East preamp and Nordstrom’s pick-ups sounds unusual. I’ve not used the ACG preamp but I only ever hear good things about ACG.

Lovely axes, especially the Ritter.

When I do head out to jam though I don’t have any qualms about taking good basses out; it would be a shame not to play such a nice instrument that somebody has spent so much time creating.
Good. When I had my Alembic Series, I took them out, but never let them out of my sight.
Play them in great health.

As an update to this topic, I had a belated birthday gathering at the weekend and my wife had arranged for a birthday cake that hit the centre of my Venn diagram of pedals, basses and Star Wars. It's one of the more over the top things I've seen but loved all the more for it. The bass even has the Dingwall logo on it!
