Need suggestions of delay pedal which can double as chorus

Hi,

I would like to find a delay pedal which can double as chorus. I.e. it would need modulated trails and a really short delay time. I truly like delay pedals with character (analog sounding and slight modulation). I don't know of any with that short of delay time. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Kalle

Not too sure about chorus but the carbon copy can do a modulated trails and a super short delay? Been years since I've owned one but pretty sure as a modulated short delay got no where near sound of say the boss bass Chorus as a dedicated chorus... Might be a boutique pedal that gets nearer to what you want?

Thanks for the suggestion! It goes down to 20 ms. Better than my current options, and I like the sound of it.
Any option better than 20 ms? :)

Cheers,
Kalle

Have you considered the EHX Memory Man Deluxe 550-T or Memory Boy Deluxe? In addition to being analogue, both have effects loops that allow you to process the delay signal independently of your dry, so adding pitch shift, reverb or even just a volume pedal to just the repeats is easy.

EDIT : They only go to 30ms and 34ms respectively so may not fit your bill, but then again as you get down below the 20ms mark you really are talking about flanging as the short repeats start to create their own pitch. A 15ms repeat is equivalent to an audible pitch of 67Hz. 34ms repeats are just audible at 29Hz so should be sufficient for chorus without really imparting flanger-like pitch.

Other good thing about the carbon copy is you can get it to self oscillate... Kinda fun but uncontrollable too, all it did for me was repeat oscillate louder and louder to the point of nearly blowing my speakers lol

Thanks! You might have a point. 20 ms might be short enough. I need to try it out. Haven't looked at the Memory Man. I prefer a smaller pedal (the reason I want to be able to use the pedals as both chorusy and delay). I will take a look at the Memory Boy.

[EDIT]
I found this on another site on the web:
"A chorus is obtained by mixing a signal delayed by between 6 and 10 msec with the original signal. Shorter times cause Flanging, longer times, a doubling effect. While there is some overlap, 24 msec is well into doubling territory where the effect is not so much the phase cancellation of short delays and more a general thickening."

Are you sure about the 20 ms? Do you have a link to additional reading?

I found this info in the TC Electronic TonePrint Editor manual:
"A typical chorus uses delay times around 10 ms, while a flanger uses delays around 5 ms."

The Corona Chorus delay time can be set between 0.1-50 ms. Perhaps the Flashback is an alternative. I think you can use the modulation by itself with that one...

I don't know about further reading, but I've just been experimenting with the modulated delay in my Zoom MS-100 and anything up to 35ms seems to produce a passable chorus. You are right that with feedback (multiple repeats), 20ms and above has a slap-back doubling effect, but with little or no feedback, between 1 and 3 fading repeats, it seems to work OK. Once you get down below 10ms with feedback it is most certainly in flange territory.

The demo videos of the EHX pedals I mentioned do seem to produce a reasonable chorus...

The line 6 m5 has a ton of nice delays and also includes chorus.

I can get a chorus sound out of the tc electronics flashback delays. I found a tutorial on YouTube for the settings. Seems like a lot of people are using one of the 3 programmable tones on the flashback x4 as a chorus patch.

Personally I'd recommend other options. For example the mxr micro chorus is a great analog chorus, it's inexpensive and being able to control the knob with you're foot is awesome.

If you want a chorus sound that's not very traditional sounding . Check out modulated reverbs. You can get Hardwire reverbs used pretty cheap now and the modulated setting sounds fantastic.

If you don't mind spending more money you can get a strymon blue sky which allows you to have two settings and dial in a modulated reverb and a shimmer reverb.
