New Rounds Before Every Show

I've heard the opposite as far as fret wear is concerned - the longer you leave a roundwound on it results in more fret wear because the windings hit the fret in exactly the same place for an extended period of time.
Strings stretch over time so maybe that minimizes it?? My fiver has steel frets and I see divots on the bottoms of the strings if they are on there for a long time.

I used to restring my 5 strings every 4 gigs which was every 2 weeks. I realized I was spending $100ish a month in strings and switched to Elixirs. Now I'm good for about 2 months.
I can go about six gigs at 4 hours each with a set of EB Cobalts and even then they still sound decent but just in a different way. I do want to try Elixirs. Are you using the SS or Nickels?

Nickels. I've tried them both and preferred the nickels for the mid range roundness. Still plenty of zing. I used Cobalts for about a year too. I dug them but my frets didn't. Elixirs are easy on the frets and fingers. You can really glide up and down the strings.

I maybe change rounds once a year, then I have to beat the zing out of em before I gig em. Flats are permanent. I would hire a Roady to play my bass till the zing is gone after every string change if money was no object.

Dick Dale is quirky like that. Bass player has to use a P bass AND has to play with a pick

I have no problem with that. The guy has been playing since 1955 and knows what he likes. In fact, he will be in Denver August 6 and I already have a group organized to see him. NO ONE plays like Dick Dale - you have to be there and experience it.

For my Mike Lull M5V yes, Modulus, NO! Way too bright as it is. Personal preference and it depends on the music. I do love the sound of old, broken in strings if I am in the mood for blues or reggae.

No, I'd change about every 10 shows. I was asked to play in a band a couple of years ago in which the BL paid less than $100 per night and demanded that the all strings be replaced after every show. I asked if they got free strings and he said "No". I told him that he didn't pay enough for any bass player to take the gig with that demand. Needless to say, that guy is still trying to put a band together.

Sadowsky Blue Nickels on my Sadowsky 5 and Sadowsky flats on my Fender P (though I'll still throw on my 8 year old Lakland Joe Osborn set if I feel like it) and Fender Nickels on my Fender J. I really hate that "new string zing" and would actually pay more to have the strings of my choice pre-played so that I can skip the initial 2 weeks of zing and go straight to bright but warm tones.
