I recommend spending some time on youtube checking out fretless with flats vs rounds vs tapewounds. I very much prefer fretless with rounds personally but if you’re going for more of an upright bass type sound tapewounds or flats might be the way to go. Maple like ebony is a pretty durable wood. If it gets messed up over time from the rounds you can always cost the board later on.I have a fretless 4 string on its way to me - standard scale. I have not played fretless before - I'm looking for recommendations for a good starter set of strings to throw on it (the bass is used, I'd like to change out the strings right away). Do I need to go with coated, or are flats ok (it's a maple board)?
thanks in advance for any suggestions for a good middle of the road string to try out!
awesome - thanks all! I'll probably start with some rounds or maybe the GHS Brite Flats. Was looking at the LaBella Deep Talking Flats - but maybe that's too thumpy for me. I tend to like definition in my tone....

I went on a search for fretless strings this year, tried quite a few, clearly low tension strings were the worst regardless of wind. I would up with DR Sunbeams! I would have liked to try LaBella gold or white and found them to be unavailable, which makes them hard to try.DR Sunbeams it is!! Thanks all - this will give me a great starting point to find my tone
