New Yamaha BB series

I know better than to get excited: I'm a huge BB fan (and former owner of more than a few), but I know how they do business. You'll see just enough promotion to get the faithful excited, have a stand full of them at Summer NAMM, then they will run way over their projected release date, be very constrained supply-wise to the dealers if not outright back-ordered, then a year from now they'll get dumped all over the internet while guys are saying 'whatever happened to those BB's they announced last year . . . . . . .'

I waited over a year back in the day for a US BB2000 (which they could never supply), but I got to admit the Yamaha rep did his best to soothe me, told me the one they had with my name on it got sidetracked and sent to David Hungate . . . . . . . .

I just saw all the YouTube videos on the New BB series. There are some innovative features they are adding to their basses. Such as the miter screws to pull the neck into the joint. Similar to the Bill Sheehan Attitude, and Michael Anthony 2024 bass. And they're keeping a lot of the great features like string through option, and 5 piece necks. Much like the previous generation of BBs, they have different bridges on each level. The tuners are said to be lighter openback tuners. And they changed the bridge pickup design. I suspect the pickups will be different among the models.

Nevertheless, they added a Maple fretboard version. And they changed up the headstock logo to a pinstripe with "Board Bass" and the Yamaha circle emblem on the end. Rather than show the 5 piece neck, they painted over with matching headstock finish.

They also added a entry level version BB234 and BB235. These have a 4 bolt neck like a Fender, and no miter screws. And no 5 piece neck for these entry level BBs, and no string through option.

I kind of regret getting the BB424x last September with this new line of BBs. As these new basses have some innovative features like the miter screws, and cool headstock. But, they also lack the chrome plates that IMO give the BB series it's classic look. Nevertheless, having experienced the BB424x, I have great confidence that this new line will continue the legendary sound and craftsmanship of the BB series heratige. "Board Bass"

Take a good look at the videos and enjoy them. It's likely to be the last time you see these basses marketed.

It's true, seems like you never see a BB in a store, which is a shame, they've always been great basses. On the other hand, I see the TRBX basses around a lot, so maybe that will change.

Have the made the body a shade smaller? Might save on weight, which would be nice.

The thing I immediately noticed was that the controls are now VVT rather than using the 3-way switch. I really like the switch on my BB415, I think it nails the P tone when soloing the P pickup better. If I were to get one of these (no that I need it), I might mod it to be V/T/3way.

Kinda agree with you. I love that they added Active versions and Maple fretboard version. And that headstock is cool. But I do miss the chrome plates. It sort of has a cool vibe to go along with BB series.

There have been a number of active BBs over the years already - there was BB614, IIRC, and some higher-end models. I'm sure the maple is because of CITES restrictions. The pickguard and color scheme kinda looks like they want the design to complement the RevStar guitars.

I like that green guitar. Very cool reto Art deco design with hardware. Kind of like a Reverend guitar design.

Speaking of design, is that a "ygd" logo on the pickups of these new Yamahas? Could it be "Yamaha Guitar Design"?
