New Yamaha BB series

Basically looks-wise I don't find these new basses as appealing as the older ones. And yes...looks is one factor in my buying decision.
I have to agree. It's the pickguard that doesn't quite do it for me. Would prefer if it continued down to the controls, or have a control plate, or I dunno---no pg like the old ones. I've had a couple BB1200s in my day. Why I didn't keep them I can't explain--awesome basses....

up until the BBs that ended with X, the majority of BB broadbasses didn't have pickguards. yeah there were the old bb800 and a random model here and there but i don't think they needed them. the legendary bb1200, bb2000, bb3000, bb5000... they didn't need pickguards.

Geez, i'm so on a crossroad... I want to buy BB424x in a month... But now... I just must keep waiting God knows how long till new BB's will get in stores. Cause i have to try them before i will buy BB424x

If your in the US, forget about trying one out. They never have BBs in music stores. However, a lot of online music stores know this and offer a liberal return policy (with conditions of course). I had to buy one online to try it out.

I just saw all the YouTube videos on the New BB series. There are some innovative features they are adding to their basses. Such as the miter screws to pull the neck into the joint. Similar to the Bill Sheehan Attitude, and Michael Anthony 2024 bass. And they're keeping a lot of the great features like string through option, and 5 piece necks. Much like the previous generation of BBs, they have different bridges on each level. The tuners are said to be lighter openback tuners. And they changed the bridge pickup design. I suspect the pickups will be different among the models.

Nevertheless, they added a Maple fretboard version. And they changed up the headstock logo to a pinstripe with "Board Bass" and the Yamaha circle emblem on the end. Rather than show the 5 piece neck, they painted over with matching headstock finish.

They also added a entry level version BB234 and BB235. These have a 4 bolt neck like a Fender, and no miter screws. And no 5 piece neck for these entry level BBs, and no string through option.

I kind of regret getting the BB424x last September with this new line of BBs. As these new basses have some innovative features like the miter screws, and cool headstock. But, they also lack the chrome plates that IMO give the BB series it's classic look. Nevertheless, having experienced the BB424x, I have great confidence that this new line will continue the legendary sound and craftsmanship of the BB series heratige. "Board Bass"

Take a good look at the videos and enjoy them. It's likely to be the last time you see these basses marketed.

FYI - the BBs only had the chrome plates with the last series. The BBs from the 70s, 80s, and the 414/614 series, as well as the Nathan East series never had that. It was just to make the BBs look more like Fenders.

Nice basses. I own an old BB1000S for a long time. Don't like the small pickguard though and the slightly smaller body shape. Why did they change that? The pickup blending is nice but it would be nice if it also had a toggle switch. These new basses deviate somewhat from the classic BB concept.

Everything changes with time. This new BB is for new players. Yet non-yamahas fans. Old BB is still there for buying. Basses doesnt get old, so take any BB that you like at any time. And i think they gonna sell old BB for long time yet

it doesn't look like the new body is smaller than the 2024 or the original 1200 but won't know until the real thing is in our hands i guess. i made this graphic by matching up nuts and last fret but slight angle differences may make the bodies appear to have different sizes and shapes.
