NUBD - Squier Affinity PJ, Race Red + Dimarzio PJ Pickups

I bought one of the first P/J affinity models MIC back in 2000 or so. They were a $199 special at GC. They had about 20, all in black on the floor and i had to test each one until i found one that didn't have spinning pots, wavy pg, etc. The one i ended up with was amazing, low, low, action nice frets etc. I made a bone nut and improved it even more. Also the fret board resembled pau ferro not rose wood, who knows? One of the reasons i sold it was the live sound was very bland but the recorded sound was excellent. So IMHO i would say the first 7-8 years of MIC were very spotty in quality but there were some good ones out there.

My 2016 PJ Affinity I used to create this "Jazz Bass Special Hybrid" is also Made in China and before disassembled it I play it for a while. Sounded REALLY nice. Pickups were absolutely quiet and well sounding, pots went smooth and except the lack of neck lacquer (I'm used to the Fender lacquer finish) which made the neck a bit slow, it was delicious to play and ridiculously cheap (211€). I got it for the alder body, BTW.

Well worth every Euro Cent ;)

Nice! I love the creme cover look. I may need to go that route with my ultimate bass eventually. But, one thing, it appears the slot for the low E string was cut a tad too far inward. Maybe a slight adjustment of the whole nut a bit to the left would fix this, but if it plays well I guess it really doesn't matter.

Perhaps it's the photo creating that illusion. The nut is spot-on! It also slightly goes from thick to thin with the string size.

Just strung up the bass with Kaliums for my CGDA tuning! Had to do a full setup again, but plays great!

I found this to be quite interesting...the string tree apparently has GROOVES under it, but the string tree has been turned 90 degrees so the grooves are currently perpendicular to the strings and are not in use. It's like it's optional to use the grooves. Is this normal for Fender/Squier products?

I actually prefer not to use grooves as I feel they can break the strings, but it's cool to have the option, I guess.

I recently had an as-new 2008 model find me, and I am compiling a list of things that impress me about it...
it's a long list. :)

The list of negatives- The pickguard is incredibly easy to scratch, and the hardware is not the fanciest I've seen.
That's really all.

It's really quite good.

I can't believe it. I just bought one of these body only wth no neck body loaded otherwise. and had ordered an aftermarket high mass bridge which I have used before. I also ordered new CTS pots, Switchcraft jack etc. I had an old Dimarzio pbass pickup and a neck pickup from an old Japanese jazz bass. I also had an almost new Graphite Modulus neck......

Part one of story...........body cam in off of Reverb without a blemish......the plastic covering was still on the pickups and pickguards...........black on black......I was impressed with the finish and flawless nature of what I had just received.......although it 3 weeks to get to Nashville.

Immediately, without a thought, I pulled out my parts bin, fired up the soldering iron and started to work. My first thought is oh my gosh, there wiring is excellent.........It is very clever in fact. The way they use the output jack to all three devices...instead of how we have traditionally wired up JP Basses.

The pickup design, although I must admit I never fired them up is very creative and unique in my opinion with coil springs mounted inside of the foam cushions. Then I noticed that the entire body cavity was shielded. I did not test it but was impressed that they had ground lugs running from both pickups to what appears to be conductive paint.

Modulus neck is installed....never used the CTS pots(i may regret later) I am now setting up the intonation. I must say that I am highly impressed with this Indonesian late model fender affinity bass body project.

BTW I hate to solder on those micro acme pots.....but we will see.............let me know if you want to see pics.

I may do the CTS pots in the VV.......just for dependability.......I rarely touch the tone pot. But I did drop in an orange drop....I just like the tone better.

Any opinions on the stock pickups? I never even plugged them in assuming..........Squier......but they look well made a lot like old dimarzios with the split magnets............haven't given it much thought.
