P bass Shootout Sound Comparison Video

I just had a chance to have all of these beautiful basses at the same time in my studio for a weekend.

I used it to make a sound comparison video of 6 Precision type bass guitars, 5 Fender and an alien - Maruszczyk.
Always wanted to test different eras and different price range P basses.

Let me know what You think about it :).

This was the best shootout I have ever heard!

Great song/ Great band/ Great times

Now..I was really taken with the sound of the 3TSB 68 Precision and want it!!!
...but lust after and would love to have a Charcoal Frost post modern Precision...Sounds great too

The Alien surprised me at how good it sounded

They all sound more the same than they sound different. The Maruszczyk is noticeably brighter than the others. Are they all strung up with the same strings?

I think my favourites are:
1. 1968/'62 Reissue
3. CS Postmodern 2019

But really, they all sound pretty darn good. I think I'd be happy with any one of them. Great choice of songs and great playing!

Obra, tremendous review my friend, one of the best I've seen, and excellent playing too. Very enjoyable.

They all sound good, some better than others, but to my ear the '62 reissue was the best all round.

The big surprise was the Nate Mendel. I've read guys expressing their dislike of the stock Seymour Duncan P/up, but I thought it sounded good, especially with the pick. Seemed to have a little more low end.

The Maruszczyk sounded very good too, though with a slightly more extended top end - quite a different P bass character. I thought it sounded much better than the CS, which surprised me. {I own a CS '59 and it's a GREAT sounding bass}

Of course my assessment is predicated on the sound of each as presented with round wound strings. Personally, I'm more of a flats guy, so my assessment might change if I heard each bass in a similar shootout with flats; they change the sonic character of an instrument quite considerably.

If I was to rank them, I'd go

1) '62 reissue
2) '69
3) Nate Mendel
4) Maruszczyk
5) Custom Shop
6) '79

Thanks for the effort put into this. :)

P.S. This review might have convinced me to pull the trigger on a Nate Mendel !

The 79 sounded bad with the tone all the way up but it was maybe my second favorite in all the other settings. My favorite was that cream reissue. That one sounded great. THANKS for the comparison! I think you can really hear the differences. Great playing.

they all sound like p-basses

Great comparison, @_Obra_ and thank you for doing this!

I didn't have a clear favorite across the board, or even for most of the samples. Sunburst 68 and Oly White Reissue were in my top 3 every time, though. Forget Me Nots is my go-to slap testing groove, so thank you for choosing that - and I preferred the Oly White on that one by a mile.

If I had all six basses available in the studio, I think I'd have to choose based on the rest of the mix - different midrange and top end character to all of them. For a gig, I'd be happy with any of them!

Nice audio captures.

If you were ever to do another video like this, I recommend including graphics that remain on the screen throughout the clips noting the name/year/pickups (similar to what you did for the tone settings) so the viewer can know exactly which bass they're listening to.

It's interesting how opinions are different about the 1979 Pbass. It's either the top for someone or the worst, based on the comments here and on YouTube.

I would also agree that I could play any one of them for a show or recording without any hesitation.
