Playing Whipping Post w Zero Rehearsal at a Gig

I played in a band for many years that learned all its new material this way. A call or text for what we're to have worked up and play it at the next gig. As long as everyone does their homework, there should be no issues.

Whipping Post is an easy tune...So is Dreams...
in fact I can't think of a single Allman's tune that isn't.
To play them well you just gotta map them out.
We often play an entire set of AB tunes.

Gregg once said in an interview that he woke up with WP in his head in the middle of the night and couldn't find anything to write the idea down on. So he found a pen and wrote the lyrics and some basic musical notes on the ironing board.

Sure gonna miss his incredible voice. But at least he left us nearly 5 decades of recorded material.

Whipping Post is a pretty good check for joining bands - if they can't do the intro/break correctly, move on. :roflmao:

I first heard Mountain Heart on Radio Australia, of all places. Notice the way the banjo player fingers; same thing happened to him as happened to Django Reinhardt. I was actually at that Zappa show on the pier in NYC because I worked a few blocks away - easy walk over. Best bennie by far of working in TV.

I was also at that Zappa show on the pier. I was there touring with my band. It was almost 20 years later before I realized there was a video of it. I still have the ticket stub. Great vid, btw.

I am not gonna lie - a lot of this recording is shaky - we did not rehearse at all cause we were all away over the holiday weekend. The headlining band called us and asked us to open and our band leader was emphatic about paying tribute to Gregg Allman.

The file has a few glitchy points (inadvertently created by the sound engineer (go figure?)).
Also - for the 1 or 2 people who'd actually stream this file - after we finish Whipping post we play a blues/funk original called "Cliche Blues."

Band is called Fog Swamp and we are from San Francisco.

I suspect the audience would have been just as happy with a well-executed Statesboro Blues. And it's not a difficult tune at all.

I don't get the point of doing the much more difficult tune on short notice.

IMO whipping post is the quintessential ABB song. And I get the timeliness of the wanting to do it. Perhaps the singer had a special place in his heart for this tune and its how he wants to remember Gregg. I love statesboro, but itd be a cover of a cover and not that true ABB goodness.

Side note I wonder if oteil lurks around these TB boards...hes such a nice guy, but he may be the busiest bassist in all the land
