Whipping Post is a pretty good check for joining bands - if they can't do the intro/break correctly, move on.
I first heard Mountain Heart on Radio Australia, of all places. Notice the way the banjo player fingers; same thing happened to him as happened to Django Reinhardt. I was actually at that Zappa show on the pier in NYC because I worked a few blocks away - easy walk over. Best bennie by far of working in TV.
You could always try this, I suppose:
he'd better do his homework.
They'll sure as heck know if the bassist plays the intro right, in 11/8, and the drummer just bulls through in 12/8!!+1
I can't remember having played the song but I sure know it well enough to get through it. I don't think the audience would have a clue either way if the time signature was off.
Love that avatar! That photo was in the catalog that came with my 77 Jazz bass (see my avatar photo).I was also at that Zappa show on the pier. I was there touring with my band. It was almost 20 years later before I realized there was a video of it. I still have the ticket stub. Great vid, btw.
I suspect the audience would have been just as happy with a well-executed Statesboro Blues. And it's not a difficult tune at all.
I don't get the point of doing the much more difficult tune on short notice.
Wait... It's easy but it's not..unless a train gets involved, yet you have seldom heard it played correctly I'm so confused.Whipping Post is an easy song unless the drummer is not with you, then its a train wreck without insurance. Still haven't heard too many bands play it close to correct.
Agreed! My assumption was that the entire band would mess up in the same way. Like that would ever happen...They'll sure as heck know if the bassist plays the intro right, in 11/8, and the drummer just bulls through in 12/8!!
