I use to have a ZZ Ryder(my first guitar) 4-string and played it in Drop C, but I really couldn't "bond" with it. I got the 5-String to handle heavier tunings, so I'd like to stick to a 5. One of the guys I play with likes the way my E string sounds with our off-tuning or whatever it is, so I'm just gunna keep it that way. It's not that what I'm playing is complicated or anything, it's just a strain on my body to play what I have to on my 35" scale. With a heavier E string a four string bass can handle drop C, then you will be playing the same fretboard positions as the guitarist. Some folks aim for that but others don't, it's up to your preference.
