I am not really too partial either way. I guess if I had a preference it would be dots. Though the sharkfins on Ricks fit that bass. I like the clay dots on my P too. They fit that bass. To each its own.

My old Schecter had a similar design with regards to inlays. I thought it was very neat. Two on the 12, three on the 24.I voted dots, but this kind:
Not my specific instrument, but I own similar models by the defunct U.S. Masters Guitar Works.
I played a four stringer version of that bass. Fantastic bass, but I couldn't make it happen at the time. The inlays and pickguard were very unique designs, in my opinion.I love the oval "blocks" on my Yamaha BB425X. They just LOOK country to me. And I play a lot of country on the thing.

True. Decorated with ash trays, pearl blocks on rosewood looks right.On my basses, I generally prefer none. But there is something very classic about block inlays on a Fender Jazz.
