Preamp with a powered cabinet

I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for. Maybe I'm using the wrong key words.

Anyway, of of my friends uses a Sansamp BDDI into a powered QSC K10.2 for his bass rig. I Have a QSC K10.2, so I would just need a preamp. I'd like to consider what my options are.

For those of you using a preamp into a powered cabinet, what is your setup?

I play a Ken Smith 5 string BSR if that matters. Low volume gigs, I need to cover everything from jazz to classic country.

Thanks.

I used an Eden WTDI as a preamp for my WT-1250 stereo power amp before I bought a rack mount WT-100 Navigator preamp and it worked fine.

That said, power amps need a certain amount of gain level from a preamp to be functional. You need to make sure what ever preamp you chose will be able to develop a strong enough signal for your choice of power amp to pick up.

I’ve settled on a Phil Jones PB 100 powered cab for my EUB rig with a hpf fed into a Bass Driver. Plenty of headroom and eq control for my needs but I’d want something bigger if I had to play loud with drums.

I use a Sadowsky RSD 1. I use the DI & set it to pre-eq if I’m using an active bass. I set the eq on the bass unless it’s a passive bass.

Yeah, i bought a MB2122v2 4-5 years ago, intending to add the MBP212 for a 1000watt 4x12 and the possibility of using a different preamp with the MBP 2x12 if i wanted/needed a different tone. Then all of a sudden they stopped manufacturing the 212 powered cabs. Go figure.
You can still find them if you're patient.
I love my Plex + MBP rigs.
Actually have a MB212ii also, so I got 1200 total watts of GK goodness on tap.

I'd suggest you take a look at the Eden WTDI. I've owned one for many years now. When I bought it, it was $149. Best $149 for Bass gear I ever spent. It's a DI pedal with built in Eden WT preamp. I use DNA and Eden gear and their hallmark is clean, clear, warm, and articulate amplification with exceedingly low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). I originally bought it because I was required to use a Peavey 112 combo at a small brewpub where we played almost every Friday (hosted Open Mic Night events). Just couldn't get a sound I liked out of it and they wouldn't let me bring in my DNS-410 cab.

So I bought the WTDI and plugged it into the effects-in/return of that little Peavey amp and suddenly it sounded just like I was playing one of my Eden or DNA rigs! That's because plugging the WTDI into the effects-return/in of virtually any amp will bypass that amp's preamp and send the signal from my DI pedal with preamp directly to the power section. This is basically the same thing you are talking about doing with a powered PA speaker.

It works great and I've made all kinds of amps such as Ampeg, acoustic, GK, Markbass, Peavey, Fender, etc. I don't even mess with trying to dial in an amp in the backline anymore. I just plug in my bass through my wireless to my WTDI and my WTDI into the effects-return of the amp. I already know what settings sound good with my '82 Jazz through it, so I don't waste time trying to figure out how to make a backline sound good...easy-peasy!

It also records beautifully. Was told I needed to go direct to the board at a Pro studio in Seattle in 2019 because they were getting too much bleed over between the bass and drums. So I plugged in my WTDI, plugged it into their wall jack, and played the 3-hr. session with it. At the end of the session both the sound engineer and the owner of the studio came out to see what I was using because it sounded so good they hadn't made any EQ changes or compression at all on the raw tape. I actually just run it flat with the mids toggled to the 500Hz position and boosted to 1:30 or so. I don't engage the adjustable compressor or the Enhance (shape) control with my passive Jazz Bass. Only weighs about a pound, so I always carry it in my gig-bag.

Well I am loving the Ampeg SGT DI and pre-ordered the Tech 21 XB Driver … and just as I started thinking about a powered cab a super affordable Blackstar U250ACT popped up on Reverb (and wuz snagged!) Taking a gamble on the sound of that powered 115 (never auditioned one) but assume it’ll do the job easier than continuing to reach around for effect return inputs.

You'd simply have to decide if . . .

a) you want to use a pedal-style preamp between you and the powered cab, or . . .

b) something more hi-fi like a serious channel strip, or a rack-mount bass preamp

You just want to be sure that you have a match between the output signal of whatever you use and the input of the powered cabinet, 1/4" or XLR, balanced/unbalanced, etc., for a good fit.

i see no advantage to bringing
rig 1~ preamp and powered pa cab vs
rig 2~ my markbass lm2 and 2x10 neo cab
the schlep is nearly identical. i’ve rehearsed with the preamp/pa cab and wasn’t happy. if i’m onstage with a speaker make it a bass cab please.

My first gig without an amp was just last week. It went perfectly. I wouldn’t hesitate to go that way again. My board is SansAmp BDDI, MXR comp and Broughton HPF. The SansAmp by itself would have done the job well though.

Glad you like your rig. Advantages for me?

1) I'd drop about 30 lbs from my current rig.
2) One powered speaker and preamp are much easier to lug around, weight aside, than my current rig.
3) I already own a QSC K10.2, so no additional expense for a speaker.
4) A bass player that I currently play with has this rig so I've seen it in a lot of different situations with a lot of different basses and it's always sounded great.

Used to play a Zoom B3n pedal into an EV ZLX15P powered cab (250W RMS). While I was mostly happy with the sound, it just didn‘t cut it for me. Mostly b/c a powered PA cab is not a bass cab. Knobs are on the back side and the preamp is not designed for getting overdriven. Using a Quilter BB802 into a Barefaced Big Baby 2 now. Happy camper.
