Recommendations for a fat sounding envelope filter with up and down modes?

I am consistently amazed by how versatile the Riddle is, and I haven't even messed with the built in distortion much. Still need to mod the internal trim pot to the surface.

I love how it sounds with fuzz and distortion, especially in the HP mode for some gnarly snarling mechanical alien noises drool it can go from very subtle to extreme filtering.
Analogman modded the distortion trim pot to the outside for me. It's so worth it!

I need to find someone to do it for me or give it a try, not sure if I have all the tools I would need though.

There's a local workshop near me that has lots of tools for projects including soldering stations I have been meaning to check out.

I have an MXR Bass Envelope Filter, MXR Bass Auto-Q, and DOD FX-25B. They all have their charm, but when I needed a more full featured filter, I got the 3Leaf Wonderlove Deluxe. It's obviously a step or two up from those other pedals, but I've never been happier. It kills. I'm always wanting to get more pedals, but I haven't even thought about other filters since getting the 3Leaf.

EHX all the way, I own the Riddler which is the guitar version of the Enigma and it works great on guitar bass and keys. The attack/ decay controls are way better then up/down modes IMO as they allow much more fine tuning. Also the start/ stop let you really sculpt the envelope shape and frequency range. You can do some really weird stuff by inverting them and cranking the sensitivity, and having 3 filter modes is sweet. No volume control but the mix helps and you can adjust the input signal and sensitivity for fine tuning.

I picked up an Enigma recently. It's certainly tweakable and has some pretty far extremes available. It has up/down and bandpass modes. The Q control when maxed could blow out some speakers. Other controls have a wide range of settings as well.

Also it has distortion built-in and an input for an expression pedal which is kinda nice.

Not me but this video shows it off nicely :

I run a Pitch Fork through the Enigma as my bass synth setup. I opted for both rather than the MicroSynth since it's quite a bit more versatile.

What about the Bottom wah rocker? That one sounds like a great filter to my ears.

Also the Fwonk Beta is supposed to be pretty sweet too.

moogerfooger mf-101. Amazing pedal. One of the few pedals I have seen that has envelope CV out. So you can control other stuff with the envelope, in addition to the filter. Or use expression pedals for any of the parameters. I have a Moog CP-251 cv processor, in which you can mix the envelope with LFO's, sample and holds, noise and any other external CV sources. Just a single pedal is infinite in possibility, then you add even just one more and you got a crazy semimodular effect system.

But that's just the functionality, it also has a modern update of the classic 24db/oct moog filer, as well as an ARP stye 12 db/oct, which is much more aggressive and raw. I love the MF's because almost everything on the market is just subsets of what the moog can do just functionally.

I will second, third, or fourth the vote for the Filter Twin, but has anyone been able to put a volume pot inline with its "on" signal? I was told by Aguilar that it wasn't possible to add volume control, but that's the only thing that has driven me to other filters - the FT is too loud.

I've run a HAZ Mutron, FX-25, and 3Leaf Proton in the past, but haven't been on the market since i got my old silver case Wonderlove. Super fat, very flexible, and sounds terrific.

Everyone's experiences are so different with filters. The Aguilar was definitely a cool, in your face, versatile kind of sound, but it was the least "fat" of any filter I've tried.

I guess it depends on what you mean by fat, tho. For me, it means that the filter action touches low frequencies. The DOD fx25 definitely is this but is limited in other ways; the Maxon definitely is, and the EHX can be dialed in to do this and just about anything else you can imagine

Many thanks for all the suggestions guys.

These last few days I have learnt about many pedals I never knew existed!

From YouTube videos and online searches I seem to always get back to EHX Enigma or 3Leaf Audio's Wonderlove. Both pedals are larger than I'd ideally want and one is digital, but I think they will both have the versatility I want and the blend function I need.

Many thanks again!

Peace,

Rob.
