I dunno, I looked at a guitar once and the PO had tightened EVERY pickguard screw so tight, that he cracked the finish around EVERY SINGLE screw point.
He didn't just do it once and think "hey maybe I shouldnt tighten these so much" he did it to ALL 10-13 screws.
The two are not as closely related as you might think. You should see the awful house painting that has been done by a friend of mine who is a highly skilled harpist. YIKES! And my neighbour who is a highly respected blues player is simply dangerous with a screwdriver.
I can play bass. I can do a decent setup. I can rewire and change pickups, tuners, etc. But I am dangerous around paint. I can walk through a room with a sealed paint can in it and I will get paint on me, the carpet, and a window. My late wife would not allow me in the room where painting was going on.

It sure doesn't hurt to help the neck along, but I'm not convinced it's necessary. I haven't had any failure of the threads when adjusting a truss rod.
I haven't had threads strip, but I do hear creaking sometimes, indicating the threads aren't turning smoothly when there's tension on them. Relieving the tension sort of helps things out.
